What do the Loyola Chicago Men’s Basketball Team and Easter Have in Common?
In a word, faith.
It has been a pleasure to watch the Loyola Ramblers in the NCAA Tournament over the last couple of weekends. They have been the underdog in each game, yet they continue to win – four games and counting. My Dad even texted after the third win, “Your team did it again!” It is very exciting!
But what has been most enjoyable is seeing how these young men act on and off the court. Not one of them has tried to take credit for a win. They seem to believe that, win or lose, they will do it as a team. In this day and age when there seems to be a couple players on many teams who want to soak up the glory, these team members are humble.
It’s all about Sister Jean!
In fact, the real story of the NCAA Tournament has been Sister Jean, the Loyola Ramblers’ 89-year-old chaplain. She is with them before, during and after each game. The team members greet her, look for her words of encouragement and show her great respect. I’m not saying that other teams wouldn’t show an elderly woman some respect, but it is how the players on this team interact with her that is so wonderful to see.
There are two games left in the tournament. I am confident that when they practice this week for their Saturday matchup against Michigan, they fully believe they can win. Why? Because they have faith – in themselves, their teammates, coaches, Sister Jean and God. They trust that they will do their best – together – to win.
That is what Easter is all about – having faith that Jesus rose from the dead. Faith isn’t always easy. Even the apostle, Thomas, didn’t believe. That is where the term “doubting Thomas” came from. But we work at faith each day in many areas of our lives.
What do I have faith in as we enter Holy Week?
- I have faith in my wife. She is my rock and my strength. We have been through so much together, and we know the best is yet to come.
- I have faith in my children. They have grown up to be remarkable adults. I can’t wait to see what they each do next. I am so proud of them.
- I have faith in God. He, too, is my rock. When I finally gave my will and my life up to His care, miraculous things happened. I enthusiastically look forward to each day knowing something good will happen. Like the Ramblers, I will do my best.
As you color eggs with your children, take out the good china, and celebrate Easter with your family remember why we celebrate. Our God is an awesome God. And remember to say a little prayer for the Loyola Chicago Ramblers; Sister Jean could use all the help she can get!
Happy Easter!
