Being Happy is Good for Your Health

Being Happy is Good for Your Health

Being Happy is Good for Your Health

By Mike Cooper

happy memberThere have been several studies showing that being happy is good for your health. There is a connection between being happy and optimistic, and a lower risk of cardiovascular disease. Happy, optimistic people tend to maintain good habits as well – exercising, eating healthy, and getting a good night’s sleep. These things help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Want to be as happy as this member? Here are 5 tips:

  • Be Optimistic. You can be a ‘glass-is-half-empty’ or ‘glass-is-half-full’ kind of person. Choose half-full. It doesn’t cost anything! Try to look on the bright side, even when the negative might overshadow it.
  • meditation-609235_640Breathe. Not just breathing to live, but deep, controlled breaths. Meditating for even 5 minutes a day can help you focus and put you at ease. There are a variety of classes and YouTube videos that can teach you the right way to meditate.
  • Do Something Nice Each Day. It could be for you or for someone else. The act of doing something nice will give you a positive mental boost and will turn that frown upside-down! Sometimes when I have done something nice I hear, “You have done your good deed for the day.” I reply, “There is no daily limit on good deeds.”
  • Get Some Sunlight. Sometimes that is easier said than done in these Chicago winters, but there are plenty of days when the sun is shining. Open the blinds and let the sun in. If you work in an office space with no windows, try to get out and enjoy the sun for even a few minutes – even if you have to sit in your car if it is cold outside. Here at Naperville Senior Center we have several windows to bring in natural light. We think it makes a difference when people can see a beautiful day!
  • Accept Yourself as You Are. Is your nose too big, your hair too curly (or straight), or you wish you could drop those last few pounds? Don’t beat yourself up over it; accept yourself as you are right now. That doesn’t mean you should avoid self-improvement, but take it in stride. Being critical of yourself will take away all the positive things you do for others.

At Naperville Senior Center we strive to bring happiness each day to our Members. We want them to enjoy their time with us through socialization, activities, games and puzzles, exercise and even breaking bread together. We are thrilled when we hear them say they look forward to coming each day; we know we are succeeding!

When is the Right Time to Downsize?

When is the Right Time to Downsize?

When is the Right Time to Downsize?

Downsizing. Getting smaller. The connotation is that you are losing something. As Americans, we hear over and over that bigger is better. If someone said, ‘You should downsize,’ what would you think?

But downsizing isn’t a bad thing. It just depends on where you are in your life and what you want to do in the future. A couple years ago, a friend’s wife wanted to move to a ‘55 and older’ community, but my friend was totally against it. ‘Those communities are for old people.’ Not really. By definition, the residents of the community have to be over 55, but come on, there are a lot of us that are over 55 and we aren’t ‘old!’ It turns out that he loves his house and the community. Another friend, who is over 60, recently bought a condo with his girlfriend after they each downsized from their own homes and they couldn’t be happier having their weekends free to do whatever they want.

So how do you know when you should downsize and whether it is right for you?

Here are a few things to think about when:

  • downsizeDo you NEED the space that you currently have? You may want to ask yourself some of these questions…do you still have children (even adult ones) living with you? Do you entertain regularly where the space you have is needed? Is something tying you to your current home? Can you afford to live there after you retire?
  • Are you able to maintain the inside and outside of your home? Not only can you physically maintain it, but do you want to do that work? If not, can you afford to have it maintained by a professional service (landscaper, housekeeper, etc.)? Some people enjoy cutting the grass, working in the garden or keeping their house clean and tidy; they find it therapeutic. Other people want nothing to do with it or they simply cannot physically do it.
  • downsizeIf you no longer had to maintain a property, what would you do with that extra time? Do you have hobbies or other interests? Do you have family or a base of friends you can call on to get together periodically?
  • If you weren’t living where you are now, where would you go? Would you live in the same town, the same metropolitan area, or would you move farther away? Would you move closer to family and friends or start somewhere new? There are many options to consider: apartment; condo; townhouse; smaller single family home; 55 and over communities; and more.
  • What can you afford? Can you afford to stay where you are now even into retirement? Could you afford to live in your ‘dream’ location when you retire? If not, it’s time to think about plan B or C.

There are many considerations to take into account when you think about downsizing and it is never too early to start thinking about them. Talk to a financial planner, a tax advisor or other trusted professional to help you think through the financial implications. Talk to your spouse, partner or family about the personal and emotional implications of downsizing.

Whether your loved one lives in a big house or a small apartment, they may not be able to stay safely at home by themselves every day. Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is designed to give your senior loved one a ‘home away from home.’ Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact our Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Theresa, at 630.857.3017. 3 Reasons to Give Your Loved One a Hug Today

3 Reasons to Give Your Loved One a Hug Today

3 Reasons to Give Your Loved One a Hug Today

hug-1-300When was the last time you hugged someone? Today? Yesterday? Last week? You may not even remember; a hug may not seem like something you commit to memory. But a hug is much more powerful than you realize.

In the ‘Rules of a Gentleman,’ rule #276 is ‘Don’t underestimate the power of a hug. It can turn her day around.’ Actually, it can turn ANYONE’S day around!

On National Hug Day, we want to share a 3 reasons why you should give someone a hug today (of course, with their approval!):

  • hug-2-300Happiness. When we are in an embrace with someone, a hormone called oxytocin is released, which gives us a feeling of comfort and safety. This neuropeptide promotes feelings of dedication and trust. In other words, we are happier and less stressed.
  • Better Health. Oxytocin is not just good for your mood, but good for your health too. When we are hugged, our heart rate and blood pressure are lowered. When you hug someone, not only will you feel better, but you just might live longer!
  • Older Adults Get More Benefit. The older we are, the more we can benefit from giving – and receiving – a hug. Physical contact with older adults, especially those who are more frail or lonely, can help lower stress and feelings of loneliness. When an older adult is not lonely, their mood improves, their outlook improves, and not surprisingly, their health may improve.

hug-3-300At NSC we engage with our Members all the time, whether we are listening, playing, singing, socializing, or exercising with them. Our Members have the opportunity to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, socialize, exercise, and have fun with us and the other NSC Members throughout the day.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Much Success in Year One!

Much Success in Year One!

Much Success in Year One!

By Mike Cooper

NSC 031715Can you believe it was just one year ago, on St. Patrick’s Day 2015, when we had our first ribbon cutting after opening our doors on February 25? We have had many successes since then! We are excited to have our 1st Anniversary Party and Business After Hours again on St. Patrick’s Day 2016 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm!

You’re not sure what we have accomplished in the last year? Here are a few highlights of our success:

  • Adult Day CenterOur charter Member, Charlene, started with us the week after we opened. We love having her here; she continues to brighten our days with every visit!
  • We hosted our first of two ribbon cuttings on St. Patrick’s Day with the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Several Members have joined us throughout the year. We are grateful to have each and every one of them with us!
  • NSC 062315We hosted a mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society in June, and raised over $2,400 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise – and being able to do it for an important cause was a great motivator!
  • NSC 103015We provided fun activities for our Members including planting a garden (and then enjoying the fruits and vegetables of their labor), dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween to get treats and play games with our Members.
  • NSC 120915We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn. Do you need a space to hold your workshop? Give Mike a call at 630-857-3017.
  • NSC 110715We hosted our 1st Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in November. Thank you to all 23 vendors who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making most of our crafts that were sold that day.
  • We hosted a Business After Hours event with co-sponsor Oasis Senior Advisors, for the Naperville Chamber of Commerce in December. We had a fantastic turnout; thank you to all the Chamber and community members who joined us to celebrate the holidays and check our facility.
  • Oscar NightWe hosted our own ‘Oscar’s Day Awards’ with our Members just before the Academy Awards! Our competition was fierce, but we outstanding performances!

Don’t forget to join us on St. Patrick’s Day, Thursday, March 17, 2016, from 5:30 – 7:30 pm as we celebrate our 1st Anniversary and host a Business After Hours. We look forward to seeing what the next year brings!

If you haven’t had a chance to join us at one of these events, just contact us to schedule a quick tour or a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

Three Takeaways from Super Bowl 50

By Mike Cooper

american-football-220047_640There is a lot of hoopla surrounding the Big Game this Sunday.  It’s the 50th Super Bowl; it’s the biggest age difference between opposing quarterbacks in the Big Game; and it could very well be the last game of a future hall-of-fame quarterback.

What do those things have to do with you and me? Here are three takeaways from Super Bowl 50:

  • Whether you are old or young, you can be a leader. Don’t think there is a certain age range for leading. Presidents have been young and old. These 2 teams are led by their quarterbacks, who are young and old (relatively speaking, of course). There are many qualities that make up a leader; age is not one of them.
  • Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Peyton Manning is not the dominate force he once was, yet his team is in the Super Bowl this year. In addition to his contributions, he expects the rest of his team – offense and defense – to step and play, well, as a team. When you need help – a little or a lot – ask for it. You’ll be surprised at the support you receive.
  • If you can do it alone, then do it. The only thing we haven’t seen Cam Newton do is catch his own passes! Yet he has passed, run, jumped and dove his way into the NFL record books. Peyton Manning, with all his NFL records, was never that kind of a quarterback. If Cam can continue being that physical as he gets older, our hats come off to him. As Americans continue to get older, there are things we may be able to do safely on our own. If so, do them and enjoy the independence.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! He could go anywhere he wants, but due to the socialization and other cool things, he chooses to come here a few days a week. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Get Rid of the Winter Blues!

Get Rid of the Winter Blues!

Get Rid of the Winter Blues!

Picture5

Cardio Exercise

The lack of sunshine and longer dark hours can make anyone feel bummed, and ignoring these feelings could worsen the problem and require medical attention for those who develop seasonal affective disorder. Senior adults are especially a concern, considering many are less mobile and less active on their own. Fortunately, there are many tips to help you or a loved one kick their winter blues to the curb.

Open the Shades and Blinds

Allowing sunlight to flood the room as much as possible while it is shining is a great way to boost your mood. If the weather permits, going outside for a while each day is another rewarding alternative to being cooped up indoors all winter long.

Stay Active

There are many exercises you can do in your own home when it is much too cold to go outside. Cleaning around the house, lifting light weights, and walking are just a few of the various options. It is important that you and your loved ones are staying active during the winter time and are not overeating, which could cause additional health problems.

Socialize, Socialize, Socialize!

Especially during the colder months it can become difficult to leave the home and stay connected with friends and family. Socializing improved mental and emotional health and is a helpful reminder that we are all in this winter struggle together! Utilizing social media is an extremely efficient option and is easily navigable for anyone, including Senior adults. Help your loved ones add friends and family members and start chatting!

Maintain Health

Ensuring that you are keeping a healthy diet despite the dark and cold temperatures will eliminate unhealthy weight gain that occurs due to increased craving for sweets and a “hibernation” feeling during winter, and improve physical health. As we all know, winter season is also cold and flu season, and being sick makes winter seem even more dreadful. Practicing good hygiene and hand washing is crucial to keeping you and those around you healthy. Make sure to frequently sanitize germ-concentrated areas such as door knobs, railings, and phones/remotes.

Have a Positive Outlook

If you change the way you think about winter and incorporate activities that you enjoy each day, your mood will improve. A majority of the sadness we endure in winter is caused by our own thoughts of the cold, and it is important to remember that winter will end and warm months are only getting closer as each day passes. So, stay positive and Spring will be here before we know it!

Common signs that you or someone you know is experiencing a case of the winter blues include a general lack of interest in life, increased tiredness, and increased sadness. Practicing these tips can help make winter seem less brutal and improve your overall happiness and well-being, but don’t worry, winter will be over soon enough!

Here at Naperville Senior Center we offer a variety of fun activities, crafts, and exercises that are both enjoyable and physically and mentally stimulating. We are currently in the process of an exciting Winter Olympics including shot put (used with bags), biking, walking, and shuffleboard. We sure aren’t letting this frigid weather bring us down!

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.
