5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

5 Life Lessons for Caregivers of Seniors

There’s bad news and there’s good news. The bad news is that caring for an aging loved one has no guide book. The good news is that you are not alone and you certainly aren’t the first person to wonder how on earth you can fit all a caregiver does into 24 short hours each day.

While we don’t have all the answers, we can certainly provide some guidance. There are some life lessons you can take with you as you forge your way through your caregiving journey.

To start, here are five inspirational quotes for senior caregivers:

  1. setting boundaries, life lessons“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”-Aesop

Remember what you are doing has worth and value. Some days may be harder than others, but no matter what happens, your care makes your loved one rich in life.

  1. “Love begins by taking care of the closest ones—the ones at home”—Saint Theresa

Whether the senior you care for lives with you or lives across town, they are the closest to you. Caring for them sets a loving foundation in your life that others will surely notice (and even envy!).

  1. “Effective health care depends on self-care; this fact is currently heralded as if it were a discovery.”—Ivan Illivich

The idea of self care is often portrayed as a new-fangled luxury when in reality it’s just basic life management. You don’t need to buy a $40 bath bomb or go on a rare juice cleanse to take care of yourself—you just need to make sure your life is a healthy one. Eating right, sleeping well, and having patience with yourself are some of the best places to start.

  1. life lessons“You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind” –Joyce Meyer

Turn that frown upside-down! Take time throughout the day to laugh with your senior loved one and have fun together. This will make both of your lives full and happy!

  1. “Everything has been figured out, except how to live”—Jean-Pal Sartre

You are not a failure if you don’t have everything figured out and perfect; that just means you are human. Enjoy the fact that not everything has to (or even can) be exactly right. No one will hold it against you if you make a mistake or take a break.

Be kind, be patient, and be forgiving; these are the lessons that come up again and again for caregivers. Hopefully, these wise words can offer up some support as you attempt to balance all three. Overall, what’s important is the fact that you can absolutely be a good caregiver. So relax, enjoy what you’re doing, and listen to the wisdom around you!

Patience is by far the biggest challenge. I have seen both sides of the spectrum watching our Members and their families. It is all about attitude. Barking orders at your aging loved one actually increases everyone’s irritability. Patient caregivers, watching and carefully guiding their slow-moving spouse or parent to the car, have a very calming influence. Remember to treat everyone how you would like to be treated.

Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services is designed to give your senior loved one a ‘home away from home’ and give the caregiver, you, time to yourself. Whether you need time to be more productive at work, help your kids with their homework, get them to after-school activities or take time for yourself, we provide a safe, fun environment for our Members.

Each day our Members spend time socializing, verbalizing, improvising, evangelizing, visualizing, exercising, having fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for you and a great social environment for your loved one, contact our Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Theresa, at 630.857.3017. You can also schedule a tour to see what they have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

Are Frozen Foods Good For You?

frozen foods, healthy foodsDo you eat as many vegetables in the winter as you do in the summer? Fresh vegetables tend to cost more when they are out of season – and a lot of them are out of season this time of the year. With winter upon us, we ask the question, “Are frozen foods good for you?” Specifically, are frozen vegetables good for you? There are many opinions about different types of vegetables, such as organic fresh, regular fresh, canned, frozen, etc. How do you know what to choose?

Here are some helpful tips about different types of vegetables:

  • Canned: The least nutritious of all veggies. They tend to lose a lot of nutrients during the preservation process before being canned. If you can stay away from canned vegetables, you’ll be better off.
  • Fresh (whether organic or not): Get fresh vegetables if they are in season. But unless they are locally sourced, they are probably picked before they are ripe since they have to travel days or more to their final destination. This produce will not have their full nutritional value, even if they look ripe on the outside.
  • Frozen: Frozen vegetables are usually picked at their ripeness, and quickly blanched to remove bacteria. Then they are flash-frozen to lock in that freshness. This produce has the most nutrient-rich vitamins and minerals. Keep in mind that the longer they sit in the freezer, the more those nutrients will begin to break down. So don’t let them sit forever! Be leery of frozen vegetables in sauces that can add a lot of fat and calories. Look for the plain frozen vegetables.

Make sure your loved ones get the nutrients they need

It is important to get in as many fruits and vegetables as you can each day (the guideline is 9 servings!). Whether fresh or frozen, you are getting the nutrients your body needs. If the produce you are looking for is not in season, you know it is coming from far away, or you just want the convenience, consider getting frozen. You’ll be happy you did.

We provide nutritious AND delicious meals for our members

Naperville Senior Center provides a hot, noontime meal and snacks for each of our Members. Our veggies, biscuits and ice cream arrive frozen. Our entrées arrive frozen and fully cooked. We heat them up in our convection oven and Members rave about the deliciousness of everything including pot roast, baked cod, chicken Kiev, meat loaf, chicken dumplings and more.

Dessert time is very popular with our Members. There are fruit cups, cookies and fresh fruit, but the frozen treats are preferred. In addition to great food, we encourage our Members to socialize, exercise, play games and puzzles, sing, clap, dance, spend time on the computer, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

Presidential Facts You May Not Know

By Mike Cooper

There are many facts about our presidents that are widely known. But as we celebrate Presidents’ Day, we thought we’d share some facts about a few presidents that you may not know.

Did you know?

  • jb_nation_grant_1_mThomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia. He is the only president to have founded an institution of higher learning.
  • Andrew Johnson was drunk during his inauguration. He was noticeably drunk during his inauguration speech!
  • Ulysses S. Grant got a speeding ticket while riding a horse. He was going too fast down a Washington street! Go figure…
  • William Taft served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court after leaving office. He was the only cowboy-67630_640former president to serve as the head of two branches of government and later swore in two other presidents.
  • Woodrow Wilson is the highest educated president. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science and History from Johns Hopkins University. No other president has a Ph.D.
  • Gerald Ford was a fashion model. He and his wife, Betty, both modeled earlier in their lives. President Ford even posed for the cover of Cosmopolitan in the 1940s!
  • Ronald Reagan was a stand-up comic. We all know he was an actor, but when that career was on the skids, he took a gig in Las Vegas as a stand-up comic for a few weeks.

At Naperville Senior Center, we look up facts about holidays, like Presidents’ Day, to share with our Members so they continue to learn and use their brain power. In addition to mental exercises, we encourage socialization, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air

By Mike Cooper

heart-598048_640As the song goes, “Love is in the air, in the whisper of the trees. Love is in the air, in the thunder of the sea.” As we close in on Valentine’s Day this Sunday, there are many things pink and red in stores, on television and in ads. Retailers want you to believe that your loved one will love you more with a card, candy, jewelry, or dinner out.

I’m not suggesting that you skip getting your loved ones those things (my sweetie may see one or more of those), but what can you do for others, even strangers, that would make their day?

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Pay it forward. When you go through a drive-thru, pay for the person’s coffee or meal in the car behind you. You have no idea how a small gesture like that can brighten someone’s day. If they do it for the next car, you will have started a trend to brighten the day for a lot of people.
  • Shovel someone’s driveway. Whether an older person lives next to you or someone younger, shovel their drive when it snows just because. Right now the forecast calls for snow on Valentine’s Day; what better way to brighten someone’s day than clearing the snow for them.
  • Make a meal for someone who can’t get out. Do you know an older adult who doesn’t go out much (or at all) or just someone who is sick or struggling? Make a meal and deliver it to them. If you are delivering to an older adult, make sure to have clear instructions on it for reheating. A hot meal can really warm the spirit! Better yet, invite them over for dinner.
  • Make a call. Is there a relative or friend you haven’t talked to in a while (especially someone older)? (I mean really talked to, not just a post on Facebook.) Pick up the phone and call them. They would love to hear from you, just to know that someone is thinking of them. Ask them about a favorite Valentine memory.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to cost a fortune; you can make someone’s day in small ways. Just give it some thought.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one when they can’t safely be on their own during the day. We provide them with a hot, noontime meal and the socialization to keep them from being lonely. Your loved one is truly our loved one.

Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In fact, one of our Members drives himself to our center! He could go anywhere he wants, but due to the socialization and other cool things, he chooses to come here a few days a week. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Social Seniors Have Better Quality of Life

Social Seniors Have Better Quality of Life

Social Seniors Have Better Quality of Life

By Mike Cooper

How important is social support to older adults? It seems like this question is easy to answer. As humans, we are social creatures. We generally look to other people for interaction and comradery.

If that is the case for someone who is 20 or 30 years old, it is even more important for someone who is 70, 80 or older. This interaction may come from family members, neighbors or friends. But what happens when some people from that support system have to work, get sick, move away, or possibly, die? That is the unfortunate case for some older adults. Most people do not seek out isolation and loneliness purposefully, but they are thrust into it by unfortunate circumstances.

How can you help an older adult who might be isolated from their social network? Here are 4 tips to help provide social support to an older adult:

  1. primary-nsc-4Go for a visit. We all are busy and have things to do. But do you have 30 minutes once-in-a-while to stop over and visit with an elderly neighbor or relative? Probably. Maybe you just visit; maybe you bring a game or puzzle that you can play with them. The senior will appreciate the interaction.
  2. Cook them a meal. If you know the senior well enough to know if they have any dietary restrictions, make them something for dinner that can be easily reheated. Even package the food in separate disposable containers with the name of the item and date it was made on the lid so it can be frozen, if necessary. Many seniors don’t cook, so having a hot, homemade meal might be a treat.
  3. Bring them a plant. Most seniors don’t need knick-knacks; they have plenty already. But having a flowering plant in the house will do wonders to improve someone’s spirit.
  4. Have them check out Naperville Senior Center. A senior will never be lonely at the Naperville Senior Center. We have activities, games, music, and exercise programs for all levels, a hot noontime meal, a quiet room for when someone needs a ‘time out’ and so much more.

Come Visit! To learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for caregivers and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630-857-3017. We invite you to come visit and see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

The Benefits of Music for Seniors with Alzheimer’s

The Benefits of Music for Seniors with Alzheimer’s

The Benefits of Music for Seniors with Alzheimer’s

Do you know these lines?

A long, long time ago I can still remember how that music used to make me smile.

Oh, what a night, late December, back in ’63, what a very special time for me, as I remember, what a night.

A person of a certain age can tell you the song, artist, and probably where they were or what they were doing the first time they heard it.

Music can generate powerful reactions

Alzheimer’s or other types of dementia will cause seniors to lose memories of events that have happened in their lives. But personal events, to some degree, may be part of that music. Since music pulls from different areas of the Music medleybrain than those damaged by Alzheimer’s, music may help uncover some personal memories from someone afflicted with this disease simply by listening to songs that shaped the different stages of his/her life.

Music can also be used to improve their mood, manage stress, promote positive interactions, and increase cognitive functions. Since rhythmic responses do not require much cognitive function, these seniors can engage in music even when they are in late stages of Alzheimer’s. Music can generate powerful reactions from many people, with or without cognitive impairment.

Our Members participate in singing, dancing or making music

At Naperville Senior Center, we use music as an integral part of our activities in order to bring our members together, improve their moods and let them remember days gone by.

“This center has everything a senior would want or need. And, it’s run by very kind, energetic and professional owners. Five star place!! Check it out.”  Jana L; Naperville
