Celebrating the Color Pink at Naperville Senior Center

Celebrating the Color Pink at Naperville Senior Center

By Mike Cooper

celebrating-pinkAt Naperville Senior Center, we have a new theme every week, such as Craft Week, Earth Week, and Be Happy Week. We plan various activities for the week around the theme. It’s just one more way to get our Members involved in a coordinated activity. This week’s theme is Wear Something Pink.

I know what you are thinking – Why pink? Do the men even own something pink? You are thinking too literally. It’s about being creative and thinking outside the box. If someone doesn’t own something pink, we can make something during one of our craft activities that is pink that will suffice! It’s about the interaction with each other and DOING something.

celebrating-pink-carnation-300Here are a few reasons why we celebrate the color pink at NSC:

  • It can mean sweet, nice, cute, romantic, feminine, and tenderness.
  • It is the symbol of universal love of oneself and of others.
  • It is the symbol of compassion and nurturing, and is associated with giving and receiving care.
  • A pink carnation means “I will never forget you.”

celebrating-pink-balloon-game-300At NSC we strive to be compassionate and nurturing to all of our Members who receive our care. We know that we need to love ourselves in order to truly love others – and we really do love our Members as if they were a part of our family. In a way they are! We spend more time with them – listening, engaging, playing, singing and socializing – than we do with most of our own family members.

We give our Members the opportunity to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, socialize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation throughout the day. They can also take a ‘time out’ if they want just to relax or take a nap. Whatever works!

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Senior Day Care Near Me

If you had any marketing classes, you know the 4 P’s of marketing are: Product, Price, Promotion and Place. Location

And the greatest of these is “Place”.  We’ve all heard the term Location, Location, Location.  We knew our success depended on this and we were so fortunate to find the perfect location.

Back in April of 2014, I scheduled a meeting with Lori Caton, of Caton Commercial Real Estate, a member of a leads group I belong to in the Naperville Chamber. All she knew about me was what I shared as Head Chef of Sales Kitchen. We met at a coffee joint on Ogden Avenue and she was already there, and had a colleague,MAP2 Christina Caton Kitchel. I dropped my Business Plan binder on the table and both had a huge sigh of relief to see this was a real project!

We knew we needed the location to have easy access to Interstate 88 for caretakers to be able to drop their loved one off on their way to work. We looked at Ogden Mall, where K-Mart was, and where the Ogden 6 Movie Theatre is currently. With over eight different units available, surely one would work. We looked at Wilma’s, down Ogden near River Road; too far from the highway. We looked at units in the strip mall with Binny’s; nice but still a little far from the highway.

Then we spotted the location at the corner of Ogden Avenue and Naper Boulevard; Tower Crossing. An old billiards hall and even older comedy club, vacant for several years.  Senior Day Care Near Me

We got the keys December 9.

Thank you Christina and Lori. Nice job.

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

3 Life Lessons I (Hope I) Taught My Kids

By Mike Cooper

Naperville Senior Center / A Nurturing Senior Community

As a parent, you hope you can impart some valuable wisdom to your children, or at least a few good lessons along the way, to help them grow into dependable, mature adults. Sometimes you feel like all of your words or actions are falling on deaf ears; other times you see the spark that makes it all worthwhile.

Just as my dad taught me some valuable life lessons growing up, I, too, have shared some with my children.

Here are the top 3 (from my point of view):

  1. life-lessonsThe Value of Money. Wouldn’t it be great if money really did grow on trees? Well, it doesn’t. It is important to make sure that kids understand how to care for the things they have so they last, as well as the cost associated with having those things in the first place. We had no ‘silver spoons’ in our family; our children were shown, by example, how to save and when it was okay to spend. (If only our politicians had learned that lesson!)  Senior Community
  2. Be Responsible. This is easy – if you say you are going to do something, do it. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.
  3. help-life-lessons-1265227_300Make Good Choices. We have tried to instill a little bit of the Holy Spirit into our children through our actions and words. It seems too easy to see someone else’s ‘bad’ choices with social media giving you 24/7 access to pictures that shouldn’t have been posted in the first place. We hope that our kids will make the right choices to start, so not to have the ‘wrong’ pictures at all.

From generation to generation, parents want to impart wisdom to their children that they learned through their own mistakes. Sometimes it works; other times you simply have to let your kids make their own mistakes so they can learn from them. It will give them their own ‘words of wisdom’ that they will want to share with their own kids someday.

We love hearing these types of stories from our Members at NSC as they socialize with each other. Remembering the past is a great way to keep our memories sharp. We also work on their minds and spirits through socializing, harmonizing, improvising, and just plain having fun! Come on in and see what our senior community has to offer for you or your aging loved one.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

How to Find Adult Day Care Services

How to Find Adult Day Care Services

How to Find Adult Day Care Services

Selecting Adult Day Care Near You

senior center servicesAdult day care centers provide a safe environment and planned programs that include a variety of health, social and support services in a protective setting during daytime hours. Depending on the needs of (probably) your parent or spouse and the needs of their caregiver (probably you) there are unlimited options that need to be considered and might be overwhelming.

If you’re looking for adult day care for yourself, sorting through the options can also be a challenge.  It seems more advantageous for individuals to begin attending an adult day center while they can fully enjoy the activities and company of others. As their abilities and needs change, they are then familiar with the setting and feel comforted and cared for.

In all cases, it is important for the senior, caregiver and senior center staff to understand the reasons adult day care might be appropriate. Usually, adult day care is best for people with some temporary or permanent cognitive or physical disabilities. Sometimes senior just want some interaction with others. In fact some of our members drive themselves to and from our center.

For more information on the benefits of adult day care services, click here.

When to Select Adult Day Care Services

We suggest that use of an adult day center begin when a prospective enrollee needs supervision and and any one of the following:

  • adult day servicescan no longer structure his or her own daily activities;
  • finds it difficult to initiate and focus on an activity, e.g. reading, conversation, watching television;
  • is isolated and lonely or desires peer interaction;
  • cannot be safely left alone;
  • lives with someone who works and is away from the home most of the day;
  • is anxious or depressed and needs social and emotional support;
  • feels uncertain and anxious when left alone;
  • requires attention that leads to your own anxiety, frustration, compromised health and/or depression.

How to Choose Adult Day Care Services

Below are some suggestions for choosing the right adult day center for you or your loved one.

Step 1 – Determine your needs

What specific services are important to the person using the center?

  • A safe, secure environment?
  • Social activities?
  • Assistance with daily living skills – walking, eating, taking medications, bathing?
  • Therapies – physical, speech, occupational, nursing?
  • Health monitoring – blood pressure, blood sugar levels, food/liquid intake, weight?
  • Nutritious meals and/or snacks? Special diet?
  • Exercise programming?
  • Specialized care such as dementia care or TBI care?

Who we care for.

adult day care frequently asked questionsWhat do you, the caregiver need?

  • Occasional free time?
  • Coverage while working?
  • Transportation for your loved one?
  • Assistance in planning care?
  • The location of the senior center is is extremely important.

Click here for more information on how adult day care services help you and your loved one.

Step 2 – Make an appointment to visit the center(s)

Call Mike Cooper at Naperville Senior Center at (630) 857-3017 to schedule a visit. We always have a free trial available and we think you’ll appreciate Mike’s resourcefullness and passion for helping seniors. Ask about activities for seniors.

You might want to download and assess our Online Intake Packet. You can ask him questions about it before, during or after your visit.

Step 3 – Know what to ask during your visit

Step 4 – Check references

  • Talk to two or three people who have used the center you are considering. Ask for their opinion. That’s a good reason to visit several adult day care facilities near you – ask the member you meet for their opinion of the care they are receiving. Ask about the staff.

Step 5 – Try it out

  • Select a day center and give it a try for a few days. There are no term commitments.
  • Meet the staff, see the facilities, ask about the daily or weekly schedule, find out what’s for lunch!
  • Keep in mind that it often takes several visits for a new participant to feel comfortable in a new setting and routine. Staff may have suggestions for making the transition easier both at home and at the center. More: How to Convince a Parent to Attend Adult Day Care.

Step 6 – Take care of yourself

Just like they say on airplanes; that you should place the mask over your face before putting them on your child, it is important for you to be rested, confident and satisfied that you are doing the right thing. Relax knowing your loved one is being well cared for. Always feel free to check in with the center and ask questions. We are here to help you!

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

United-States-FlagAndLogo-300Did you enjoy your Independence Day? Food, fun and fireworks were in store for many people this holiday weekend. At the center of it all is the American Flag – Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes.

We all learned years ago in school that the 13 stripes represent the 13 British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first 13 states. The stars represent each of the states that currently belong to the United States of America.

But have you ever thought about why our flag is red, white and blue? Surprisingly, there is no reason! It turns out that our Founding Fathers didn’t put a lot of thought into the flag colors, but they did for the Great Seal of the United States, which is still used to authenticate certain documents issued by the federal government.

seal-president-of-the-united-states-1163400_640They are:

White stripes: signifies purity and innocence

Red stripes: signifies hardiness and valour

Blue band: signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice

These are great traits our Founding Fathers wanted this new country called the United States of America to portray to the rest of the world.

I can also see these traits in Naperville Senior Center:

Purity: Pam and I started this business out of love and the desire to help others, especially our aging loved ones. Our hearts were (and are) pure and passionate as we put the wheels in motion to create our dream.

United-States

Flag holder designed and painted by NSC Members

Hardiness: The last year and a half has been an amazing journey and we look forward to the future. Like with any business, there have been trials and tribulations; some months travelling one step forward and two backward. But we have worked – and continue to work – through all challenges with the determination to ensure NSC is “Home Away from Home” for our Members.

Vigilance: We never stop working to make things better for our Members; continuous improvement. New equipment, games, songs, activities, food… whatever we can find that provides stimulation, both mentally and physically. Many folks working in this senior services category who have toured our ‘Home’ have commented they have not seen any place as well thought out as NSC.

At Naperville Senior Center, our focus is always on our Members, providing them the opportunity to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, and have fun with us and the other NSC Members throughout the day. We work hard finding new ways to engage them while listening, playing, singing, socializing, or exercising with them.

Like our Founding Fathers did centuries ago, we have put a lot of thought into the details of our new venture and we are thrilled to share it with all of you.

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

lessons, Veterans DayRemembering our veterans and thanking them for their service is something we should do every day, not just on Veterans Day. But Veterans Day give us the opportunity to reach out to the veterans we know. I am reminded of the World War II stories my dad would tell me when I was younger. Dad joined the Navy at the age of 18 in November 1942, and served from July 1943 to January 1946. He was in the US Navy, stationed on the USS Philadelphia in the Atlantic. This was one of two ships that supplied firepower to cover Allied landings at Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and the south of France.

One harrowing story I remember had to do with a stormy night when he was on deck. The winds were whipping and the sea was in turmoil. Luckily my dad saw a huge wave coming over the side of the ship before it hit the deck. He had the chance to grab a cable and hang on for dear life. He was literally sideways as the wind and water tried to pull him away! But luckily for us, he hung on tight and has had another seven decades with us.

Most of us knows a veteran. It might be a family member, relative, friend or neighbor. If you know one who was involved with World War II or another foreign conflict, here are 3 things you can do to capture their stories while they are alive:

  • veteran-364380_300Listen. Some vets love to tell stories from their time in the military. Others do not. If they are willing to talk about their time in the service, listen to and document their stories. You may need to ask a few leading questions. Where did you serve? What were the conditions like? What do you remember most about your time there?
  • Jog their memory. There may be some vets who want to talk about their time in the service, but their memory isn’t what it used to be. If that happens, take out any memorabilia they may have from that time. Those items may bring back memories that they forgot. Then listen and document.
  • Create something lasting. Take these stories and create a short book of them that you can give to other family members or close friends. If you captured the stories on a cell phone or video camera, you could combine them and create a nice video compilation. Even if other relatives have heard these stories over the years, it would be nice for them to have this memento they can go back to after your loved one passes away.

Our country continues to be a free because of these veterans’ dedication to this land.

Especially on this Veterans Day, make sure you thank every veteran you come across for their service and remember those vets who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

At Naperville Senior Center, we are honored to have several veterans in our midst. We thank them all for their service! Our country is free because of the brave. We love to hear the stories they tell, whether it is Veterans Day or any day of the year!

If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.
