Independence – Important At Any Age

Independence – Important At Any Age

Independence – Important At Any Age

By Mike Cooper

child-558798_640Do you remember when you were 6 years old and you wanted to ride your bike to school by yourself? All you could think about was having that freedom to go somewhere by yourself. When you turned 16, you just wanted the car keys so you had the freedom to pick up your friends and go to the big game without having your parents drive you.

The same is true as you get older. Independence is important at any age! Seniors want the same freedoms that they remember wanting from their youth. They want to be able to live where they want, go where they want and do those things when they want. In some cases, as with physical disabilities, forgetfulness and memory loss, that may not be possible for safety reasons.

By making 3 changes to their environment, you can help an older adult stay independent for longer and help improve their well-being.

  1. Safety Needs. Add grab bars in the bathroom, night lights in strategic places, and pick up loose throw rugs. You can help an older adult stay safe by reducing some potential trip/fall hazards.
  2. senior women at the game tableSocial Needs. Well-being is linked to social and emotional support. Your loved one may not have as many friends close to call on because of their health issues, a move or possibly death. Getting your senior loved one involved in some social activities will improve their mood and help them feel more independent. Whether they come to Naperville Senior Center, volunteer or get involved in church activities, it is important for them to be around other people. (See our blog, 5 Benefits of Being a Social Senior.)
  3. Health Needs. Listen to your loved one when they talk how they feel and be and advocate for at doctors’ appointments. It is easy to dismiss an ache or pain, but if there is a persistent problem, take note. It is better to be proactive than reactive. If an older adult physically doesn’t feel well for a long period of time, that will affect their well-being and start to create a downward spiral affect. If an older adult feels good, they will be more active and able to take care of themselves.

From an early age, we all want to be independent. That doesn’t change as we get older. We should do all we can to help seniors safely stay independent longer.

Parents’ Day – How We Can Help Our Parents

Parents’ Day – How We Can Help Our Parents

Parents’ Day – How We Can Help Our Parents

Help your Parents By Mike Cooper

This Sunday is Parents’ Day. Some of you may have heard of it, others may not. It was established in 1994 when President Bill Clinton signed a Congressional Resolution into law for “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.”

Around Father’s Day I talked about what I learned from my dad and the values I hope I have instilled into my kids (see https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/top-3-lessons-i-learned-from-my-dad/ and https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/top-3-lessons-i-hope-i-taught-my-kids/). So as I think about this day, I want to share 3 things that we can do to help our parents as they age. Sometimes its the simple little things that help your parents more than anything.

Below are a few suggestions for simple ways to help your parents

  • dependent-441408_640Walk together. It’s as simple as that. Your parent might only be able to walk from one side of the house to the other without being winded. If so, walk with them around the house. On a nice summer’s day, you might take a walk with them in front of their house, condo or wherever they live. If they can handle it, try to walk a little further with them as time goes on; increasing their endurance. While you’re walking, let your parent tell you about something going on with them, how they’re feeling or just tell a story about past.

Getting a little exercise is not only good for the body, but it also helps the brain. And the communication is a great way to help your parent socialize.

  • Old hands solving jigsaw puzzleWork on a puzzle together. Think puzzles are for kids? Think again! There are beautiful puzzles that can be for all ages. And you can unplug for this activity; you don’t need any cords, batteries or power, just a flat surface. You can still let your parent tell you about their day or about the ‘good ol’ days.’

This activity will help your aging parent’s brain activity since they have to focus on fitting the right puzzle pieces together. Your parent will also be able to work on hand dexterity from picking up the puzzle pieces and putting them in the right place. Finally, the communication is still a great socialization mechanism for them.

If their eyesight makes it impossible to work on a puzzle, complete a crossword puzzle together. Guessing at the answers together can make for some funny moments.

  • NSC Member PianoListen to music/sing songs together. Does your parent like classical, jazz, folk music or ‘the oldies?’ Whatever music they like to listen to, play it for them and let them sing or hum along. You might even get them to clap and tap their foot to the rhythm. Based on a variety of studies, music has been shown to boost brain activity for a variety of reasons including (but not limited to): evoking emotions that bring back memories; emotional and physical closeness (through dance); engaging the whole brain by listening to music (right brain) and singing along (left brain); and improving mood and reducing stress.

Such a simple activity, but there is so much benefit from it! Did I also mention ‘socialization?’ That is key here to help your parents too!

At Naperville Senior Center, we incorporate exercise, games and music into our daily activities with our Members. I’ve been known to pick up the trumpet for the “guess what song this is” activity! Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.

Top 3 Lessons I (Hope I) Taught my Kids

Top 3 Lessons I (Hope I) Taught my Kids

Top 3 Lessons I (Hope I) Taught my Kids

By Mike Cooper / Naperville Senior Center / Adult Services

As a parent, you hope you can impart some valuable wisdom to your children, or at least a few good lessons along the way, to help them grow into dependable, mature adults. Sometimes you feel like all of your words or actions are falling on deaf ears; other times you see the spark that makes it all worthwhile.

Just as my dad taught me some valuable lessons growing up, I, too, have shared some with my children.

Here are the top 3 (from my point of view):

  1. credit-squeeze-522549_640The Value of Money. Wouldn’t it be great if money really did grow on trees? Well, it doesn’t. It is important to make sure that kids understand how to care for the things they have so they last, as well as the cost associated with having those things in the first place. We had no ‘silver spoons’ in our family; our children were shown, by example, how to save and when it was okay to spend. (If only our politicians had learned that lesson!)
  2. Be Responsible. This is easy – if you say you are going to do something, do it. It really doesn’t get any easier than that.
  3. opportunity-396265_640Make Good Choices. We have tried to instill a little bit of the Holy Spirit into our children through our actions and words. It seems too easy to see someone else’s ‘bad’ choices with social media giving you 24/7 access to pictures that shouldn’t have been posted in the first place. We hope that our kids will make the right choices to start, so not to have the ‘wrong’ pictures at all.

From generation to generation, parents want to impart wisdom to their children that they learned through their own mistakes. Sometimes it works; other times you simply have to let your kids make their own mistakes so they can learn from them. It will give them their own ‘words of wisdom’ that they will want to share with their own kids someday.

Top 3 Lessons I Learned from my Dad

Top 3 Lessons I Learned from my Dad

Top 3 Lessons I Learned from my Dad

Top 3 Lessons I Learned from my Dad – By Mike Cooper

As I spent time with my family on Father’s Day, I started thinking about all the things my dad taught me over the years. There were many lessons learned; some may have gone on deaf ears at the time. But as I got older and had children of my own, I saw the wisdom in all of those lessons.

Here are the top 3 lessons learned from my dad:

  1. You Can Do It Yourself. He showed me, by example, that you CAN fix many things on your own. I learned how to diagnose a problem, understand what was involved to fix it, how to fix it, and, most importantly, when it was necessary to ask for assistance. It helped me to think through problems logically and strategically, not only with home improvement projects, but in business too. I really appreciate that lesson learned.
  2. When my dad taught me how to golf, he made it clear that it was a gentleman’s game. Cheating was not allowed. You can learn a lot about people by playing a round of golf with them. No matter how bad of a round you are having, you should not take it out on someone else, and there is nothing to be gained from beating yourself up over it. Understand what you did wrong and learn from it so you will be better the next time. Yup, lesson learned.
  3. My dad told me to keep going after my dreams. At times those dreams were put off because of other priorities, but they were not forgotten. Pam and I didn’t give up; we kept working to reach our goal. After 25 years, we fulfilled our long standing dream by opening Naperville Senior Center earlier this year! That, in part, is what dad instilled in me all those years ago.

I have my dad to thank for teaching me the lessons that have molded me into the man I am today. I hope my children learn half as much from me as I have from my dad.

At Naperville Senior Center, we treat our Members like family. Contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.
