Is Adult Daycare Right for Your Loved One?

Adult daycare, also known as adult day services or senior day care, offers a vital  resource for families seeking supportive and enriching environments for their elderly loved ones during daytime hours. These facilities provide a safe, structured setting where seniors can engage in social activities, receive necessary health services, and enjoy companionship, all while giving caregivers the opportunity to attend to their own responsibilities or simply take a well-deserved break. Adult daycare programs are designed to enhance the quality of life for seniors, promoting their physical and mental well-being through various activities and personalized care. Today we’re going to investigate the benefits of adult daycare and if it’s something you should consider for your loved one.

The benefits of adult day care for seniors and their families are manifold. For seniors, these services offer a chance to socialize and participate in stimulating activities, which can help alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation. Engaging in such activities can improve cognitive function, enhance mood, and even slow the progression of certain age-related conditions. Additionally, having access to professional health services within the daycare setting ensures that any medical needs are promptly addressed. For families, adult daycare provides peace of mind knowing their loved ones are in a safe, nurturing environment. It also allows caregivers to balance their caregiving duties with personal and professional responsibilities, reducing stress and preventing caregiver burnout.

Choosing the right adult daycare facility for your loved one is a crucial decision that involves careful consideration of various factors. Start by assessing the specific needs and preferences of your loved one, including medical requirements, activity interests, and social compatibility. Visit potential facilities to observe the environment, staff interactions, and the types of activities offered. Ensure the facility is properly licensed and inquire about staff qualifications and the staff-to-participant ratio. It’s also important to review the cost of services and any financial assistance options available. By thoroughly evaluating these aspects, you can select an adult day care facility that provides a supportive and engaging atmosphere, tailored to your loved one’s unique needs.

Adult Day Care Services & Their Benefits

Adult day services, often referred to as adult day care or senior day care, offer a crucial lifeline for families caring for elderly loved ones. These facilities provide a safe, structured environment where seniors can engage in meaningful activities, receive necessary health care, and enjoy social interactions during the day. Designed to support both seniors and their caregivers, adult day services aim to enhance the quality of life for participants through various innovative programs and personalized care plans. They offer a diverse range of activities and therapies tailored to meet the unique needs of everyone, making them a valuable resource for enhancing the overall well-being of seniors.

Innovative Programs in Adult Day Care

One of the standout features of adult day services is the incorporation of innovative programs such as music therapy and art therapy. Music therapy has been shown to significantly improve mood, reduce stress, and even enhance cognitive function in seniors. Similarly, art therapy offers a creative outlet that can help seniors express themselves, reduce anxiety, and improve mental health. These therapies, along with other recreational and therapeutic activities, provide seniors with engaging and beneficial experiences that promote mental and emotional well-being. By participating in these programs, seniors can enjoy a higher quality of life and a sense of accomplishment and purpose.

Understanding the different types of adult day services available is essential when selecting the right program for your loved one. There are generally three main types of adult day services: social, medical/health-focused, and specialized services for those with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Social adult day services focus on providing recreational activities, social interaction, and general supervision. Medical or health-focused day services offer additional health-related services, including medication management, physical therapy, and nursing care. Specialized adult day services cater specifically to individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, offering structured activities designed to support cognitive function and reduce behavioral symptoms.

Adult Day Services Can Help with Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care

Families dealing with Alzheimer’s and dementia, adult day services can be particularly beneficial. These services provide specialized care and activities that cater to the unique needs of individuals with cognitive impairments. Structured routines, therapeutic activities, and professional supervision help manage symptoms and improve quality of life. Furthermore, these services offer caregivers much-needed respite, reducing the emotional and physical strain of caregiving. By entrusting their loved ones to professional care during the day, families can maintain a healthier balance in their lives while ensuring their loved ones receive the best possible care.

Adult Daycare for Your Loved One?

Searching for solutions to ensure the well-being and happiness of their elderly loved ones, adult daycare is a valuable option. These facilities offer a supportive and engaging environment where seniors can spend their days participating in various activities, receiving necessary health services, and enjoying social interaction. Adult daycare not only enhances the quality of life for seniors but as mentioned before, also provides crucial rest for caregivers, helping them manage their responsibilities more effectively. And allows them to be better caregivers in times of need.

One of the significant benefits of daycare for adults is the promotion of independence and social interaction. Seniors attending these programs engage in structured activities that foster a sense of autonomy and accomplishment. These activities range from recreational pursuits like art and music therapy to physical exercises designed to maintain mobility and health. By participating in these activities, seniors can maintain a higher level of independence, reducing feelings of dependency and boosting their self-esteem. Additionally, the social environment of adult daycare facilities allows seniors to form new friendships and combat the isolation that often accompanies aging. Regular social interaction is vital for mental health, helping to prevent depression and cognitive decline.

To further understand the impact of daycare for adults, real studies and testimonials from families offer valuable insights. Research has shown that adult daycare services can significantly improve the quality of life for both seniors and their caregivers. For instance, a study published in the Journal of Gerontological Social Work found that seniors attending adult day care experienced improvements in mood, social interaction, and overall life satisfaction. Testimonials from families echo these findings, with many sharing heartfelt stories of how adult daycare has positively affected their lives. For example, the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) provides numerous case studies and testimonials that highlight the transformative impact of these programs on seniors and their families.

Resources such as the Journal of Gerontological Social Work and the National Adult Day Services Association offer detailed information that illustrates the positive outcomes of daycare for adults. Additionally, when looking for adult daycare facilities for your loved ones, reading the reviews can help you get an idea of the benefits it can bring. By exploring these resources, you can gain a deeper understanding of how adult daycare can be a valuable solution for your loved ones, promoting independence, social engagement, and overall well-being.

In closing, senior day care plays a crucial role in enhancing the lives of seniors through a variety of engaging activities and programs. These centers offer structured schedules filled with activities that are designed to boost both mental and physical health. Seniors can participate in physical exercise programs, art and music therapy sessions, cognitive games, and social events that stimulate the mind and body. Such activities not only improve physical health by encouraging movement and exercise but also foster mental well-being by providing intellectual stimulation and opportunities for creative expression. By maintaining an active and engaged lifestyle, seniors in daycare programs can experience significant improvements in their overall quality of life.

In addition to benefiting seniors, senior day care centers offer substantial support for caregivers. Taking care of an elderly loved one can be both emotionally and physically demanding, often leading to caregiver burnout. Senior daycare provides a safe and nurturing environment where caregivers can entrust their loved ones during the day. This allows caregivers to attend to their personal needs, work, or simply take a break, thereby reducing stress and preventing burnout. By alleviating some of the caregiving burdens, adult day services enable caregivers to recharge and continue providing high-quality care at home.

If you are considering senior daycare for a loved one, the next steps involve careful research and planning. Begin by assessing the specific needs and preferences of your loved one, including medical requirements, social interests, and activity preferences. Research local adult day care centers and schedule visits to observe their programs, meet the staff, and understand their care philosophies. It’s important to ensure that the facility is licensed, has qualified staff, and offers a safe and welcoming environment. Additionally, inquire about the cost of services and explore any financial assistance options that may be available. By taking these steps, you can find a senior daycare center that meets your loved one’s needs and provides a supportive, enriching environment.

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

3 Ways to Prevent Your Loved One from Falling

Fall Prevention Awareness Day is also the first day of fall. Coincidence? I think not!

In most cases, fall prevention is possible. Lets do everything we can to keep seniors safe and keep

More than one in four people over 65 will fall each year! With more than 50 million seniors living in the United States, that means over 12 million seniors will fall this year. According to the CDC, more than half of those seniors will not tell anyone they fell. With that said, 25 percent of older adults who fall will be treated in the emergency room. With medical costs continuing to rise, we need to do all we can to keep our loved one safe and educate caregivers on fall prevention measures.  Together we can help reduce the amount of injuries to seniors, especially ones that are preventable.

Here are 3 falls prevention tips:

fall preventionTalk to Their Doctor or Pharmacist: Understand if the combination of medications they are on might cause them to be unsteady on their feet. If so, see what they can do to alter the medications so your loved ones are not as off-balance.

Home Hazards: Do your loved ones have throw-rugs or clutter in walkways? Those items should be removed and the home should be clutter-free. Although throw rugs may be a “favorite gift” from someone or even help to keep your feet warm on a cold surface, they are easy to trip over and can create a fall. Toss all throw-rugs (or hang them on a wall). Go fall preventionthrough the house and make sure living areas are clutter-free. Keep what is important and store it so it is out of the way. Instead of throw rugs throughout their house, make sure your loved ones have house shoes (or regular shoes that they wear in the house) with non-skid soles so their feet stay warm and safe, so they can get around more easily.

Fall prevention

Install Hand Rails: At least one handrail should be installed in long hallways and in the shower to make sure the home is as safe as possible. There should already be handrails going up and down stairs. This will provide more support for your loved ones as they walk back and forth in their house. If they feel off-balance, it is easy for them to grab the railing to steady themselves.

This is their home away from home.

Our Members are provided with a fun, SAFE environment so they feel like this is their home away from home. We maintain a clutter free environment as they move around our facility and there is always someone available if they need help. We want them to be more comfortable and safe here, even more than they are in their own home!

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

3 Ways You Can be Healthy and Happy in Your Senior Years

By Mike Cooper

Health and happiness – sounds like a great way to spend your senior years. Do you envision your senior years sitting on a boat with a drink in your hand in a warm weather climate? Or in a cabin with a cup of steaming cocoa with a great book watching a pristine snowfall? Whatever your vision, I’m sure it is not one with sickness and misery. No one wishes that for themselves.

What is your plan to achieve that goal? Health and happiness doesn’t just happen (at least not for most of us). You have to work at it throughout your life.

On National Senior Citizens Day, we want to share 3 ways you can be healthy and happy in your senior years:

  • dollar-551932_1280Check your finances. You’ve heard the old saying, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but it can buy things – and we all need some things. It is never too early to create financial goals based on your needs and wants. There are many financial planners that can help you with those goals. You can stress less as you grow older knowing that you can live the lifestyle you want once you retire.
  • Check your health. It costs a lot more to be unhealthy that it does to be healthy – doctor’s visits, prescriptions, co-pays, time off of work, etc. If you start taking care of your health at a young age, you may be able to reduce some of the negative effects of getting older such as arthritis, osteoporosis, heart disease, stroke and even dementia. We have talked about healthy nutrition and exercise in prior blogs (such as https://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/snacking-can-be-healthy/ or grandma-612016_640 senior citizenhttps://www.napervilleseniorcenter.com/5-ways-to-stay-healthy-mentally-and-physically/). These habits need to be started at an early age so you keep you don’t have to play ‘catch up’ when it comes to your health!
  • Check your network. Who will help you if something happens to you? Your wife, kids, other family or friends? A lot of this depends on where you are living in your senior years in relationship to people you know. Do you want to live near family or do you want to be somewhere exotic (or just warm)? These things should be taken into consideration as you age.

happy member, senior citizenWhether or not you are near family or friends in your senior years, you can count on Naperville Senior Center to be your “home away from home” when you need it. We treat all of our Members like family (sometimes better than family)! We can help you or your loved one keep physically and mentally active without breaking the bank.

When we hear our Members say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow!

Physical Therapy: The Cure for What Ails You

Physical Therapy: The Cure for What Ails You

Physical Therapy: The Cure for What Ails You

By Pam Cooper

I chose the field of Physical Therapy the summer before my senior year of high school. I knew I wanted to work in health care, so I volunteered at a local hospital and ‘floated’ through the different departments. When I observed the therapists working in their gym, I knew I had found my vocation. My grandmother had suffered a stroke; knowing that there was something I could do to directly impact someone’s functional mobility really hit home.

Whether you are younger or older, physical therapists can help improve mobility for people with injuries or illnesses. They are an important part of the rehabilitation process, especially for patients with chronic conditions. Physical therapy can make you stronger and help you move and feel better.

During National Physical Therapy Month, we want to tell you why physical therapy is so important.

Getting to the Source of Pain

Physical therapists not only treat pain, but they get to its source. By getting to the source, they can provide the appropriate treatments and exercises to ease the pain and help their patients move better. When the physical ailment is gone, or at least less severe, a patient’s emotional state improves as well. Since there is a relationship between physical and mental health, getting to the source Staff caring for one of our Membersof the issue is important.

Physical Therapy Treatments

Depending on the patient and the symptoms, a physical therapist may have them perform exercises such as:

  • Low-impact aerobic training – such as walking or riding a stationary bike
  • Strengthening exercises – with machines, weights, bands or body weight
  • Stretching – gentle stretches in and around the pain or injured areas

There are also treatments such as:

  • physical therapyIce and heat packs – reducing inflammation and warming muscles so they move better
  • Massage – to help injured or sore areas
  • Electrical nerve stimulation or ultrasound – these block the pain messages that go to your brain

Physical Therapy at Naperville Senior Center!

With over 25 years of experience as a physical therapist, I bring a unique outlook to our Senior Center. I have developed a seated exercise program which is led daily by either our activity director or one of our CNAs. We also offer the use of a NuStep recumbent bike, an arm bike, a walking track (which is 100’ in circumference) and a hi/low mat table for individual exercise programs (as well as home exercise programs which members bring in). We encourage all of our members to walk the track throughout the day, providing them with the appropriate level of assistance required, between social activities to promote mobility and endurance. There is no extra charge for any of these services.

We also provide our members with a host of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation such as interactive word search (both individual & group), adult coloring, singing, dancing, shuffle board bowling, basketball, Wii programs, use of computers, parachute games, musical instruments (piano, drums & lots of percussion!), cards, Bunco, Bingo and other fun activities.

5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

5 Ways Fun and Games Can Make Your Brain Healthy

By Mike Cooper

You are actually helping keep your brain healthy just by reading this blog! In a study done by Mayo Clinic of 2,000 men and women 70 and older, they found those who were on the computer at least once a week were 44 percent less likely to develop memory or thinking problems. When those same participants engaged in other activities, they were almost 25 percent less likely to develop those problems. Even participants who did crafts or played games saw a decrease in memory problems.

This shows us that it is important to keep the mind active as we age. Training our brain doesn’t have to be tedious; it can be accomplished by having fun! How can you keep your, or your loved ones, brain healthy?

Here are 5 ways fun and games can make your brain healthy:

  • Play a Computer Game. Whether it is on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, there are plenty of games available for you or your senior loved one to play. Do they like Scrabble? Have them play Words with Friends. Do they like old-time video games? They might like Angry Birds. Do they want to keep in touch with their grandchildren? Set them up with a Facebook (or other social media) account. Let them Skype or Facetime with family who live far away.
  • Play a Dice Game. Bunco is very popular here at Naperville Senior Center. It is a social dice game involving brain healthy100% luck and no skill (there are no decisions to be made), Everyone can pick up the dice and toss ‘em. Our Director of Fun keeps the pace flowing and the members throwing. “What’s the name of the game, Ray?” “BUNCO!” Prizes for all.
  • Put a Puzzle Together. Do you take each piece, one at a time, and try to get it in the general area you think it should go? Or are you an ‘outside first’ type of puzzle maker? Either way, you have to put some thought into the colors and shape of the piece. Depending on the size of the puzzle, it can take a short while or a couple days.
  • Play Cards. Anyone for Gin Rummy? Garbage? Bridge? Or a simple game of Slap Jack? Your loved one has probably played them all over the years. With each game you have to remember the rules, what cards have been thrown down, and sometimes what your partner has done. Even if you need a little refresher course (which you can get on the internet – see first way to have fun!) you could be playing together quickly.
  • Color. This is no longer a childish activity. Research shows coloring decreases agitation and anxiety. Possibly because the participant is concentrating they may ‘forget’ their troubles and become more relaxed. Members at NSC love to color and it has become a daily activity.senior activities

Our Members have fun every day!

At Naperville Senior Center we have all of these activities available for our Members every day. Some of our Members have even communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station. There are opportunities to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, socialize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

5 Reasons Why Nurses Are So Important

5 Reasons Why Nurses Are So Important

5 Reasons Why Nurses Are So Important

setting boundaries, life lessons, regain control, nursesThe theme of 2019 National Nurses Week is “Nursing: The Balance of Mind, Body and Spirit.” We celebrate all nurses, especially our nurses, Julie and Donna. They are the heart of our personalized care programs! We thank them and all nurses who lead the charge for health and wellness.

Growing older can be hard for some people, but it doesn’t have to be. Having a balance between mind, body and spirit is important for all of us, especially for seniors. When one of these areas begins to diminish, the others areas suffer as well. We can thank nurses who are on the front lines of health care, working with older patients, for their diligent effort. Nurses will try to prevent illness, facilitate healing, alleviate suffering and advocate for their patients and families. Having a nurse available to provide care and comfort for a loved one can give family members a sense of relief.

Since nurses do so much to help improve the well-being of their patients, are there enough of them to handling an aging American population?

Here are some nursing statistics you may not know:

  • More than 500,000 RNs (Registered Nurses) will retire by 2022, according to the American Nurses Association
  • One million RNs are needed by 2022 to avoid a nursing shortage
  • The need for RNs will grow by at least 11 percent each year through 2022
  • Currently there are 1.5 million CNAs (Certified Nursing Assistants) in the United States
  • The need for CNAs will grow by 21 percent in the next decade

As you can see, there are millions of nurses in the United States today and millions more needed in the next 5 to 10 years. It is no coincidence that this growth is occurring at the same time as Baby Boomers reach their senior years. The services that nurses will provide to these seniors in hospitals, rehab facilities, adult day care centers like Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services, assisted living and nursing facilities, and private homes could be the difference between a high versus low quality of life.

We want to be sure that our Members get the best care possible when they are with us, which is why we have physical therapists and nurses working at Naperville Senior Center. We have the BEST. NURSES. EVER!

Thanks to Donna, Julie, Tootz, and all of the nurses for their continued dedication to their patients

As our nurse Donna said, “The best part of being a nurse at Naperville Senior Center is assisting our Members’ healthy aging and quality of life. They are like family to us. We educate, support, and encourage them, and have fun together!” She added, “I go home with a smile every day and look forward to the next day, and I think our Members do too.”

We couldn’t agree more! Thank you to Donna, Julie, Tootz, and all of the nurses for their continued dedication to their patients.

We provide our Members with a host of activities to provide mental and physical stimulation, such as socialization, verbalization, improvisation, evangelization, visualization, exercise, and other fun activities.
