Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

Is Your Loved One Getting Scammed?

By Mike Cooper

Would you know if your mom or dad (or grandmother or grandfather) was being scammed? Wouldn’t they say something to you before they transferred large sums of money to a complete stranger over the phone? You would think so, but that is not always the case. During National Awareness Month, we want you to be aware of some facts about elder financial abuse.

despair-513529_640A recent study showed that about 1 in 20 seniors said they have been financially abused.  If a medical condition struck that many people, it would be considered a crisis! Many seniors are getting scammed by unscrupulous callers claiming to be with the government or other official authority. Sometimes they are hit by scammers claiming they won big prize or sweepstakes money.

Here are 3 ways to keep your loved one safe from elder financial abuse:

  • Talk to your loved one about scams. There are certain scams that we have heard about before: a friend or loved one suddenly in another country and has been hurt or arrested and needs money right away; you’re the ‘big winner’ in a sweepstakes, but taxes need to be paid upfront; the IRS (or other government agency) is called because you owe money and if you don’t pay now you could go to jail.

My Dad, 91 and still golfing, got a call from a scam artist claiming to be a grandson. “Grampy, I’m safe, but the car I’m in got pulled over by the cops. The driver had some drugs on his body and there was a gun in the glove box. Can you send money so I can post bail?” My crafty ole man asked the young perp if he could tell him the names of his oldest daughter’s children; the bad guy hung up. “I might be old… but I’m not stupid,” exclaimed Dad.

Make sure you talk to your loved one about these scams multiple times so they remember them. Assure them that if there is an issue with a family member, someone from the family will talk to them about it, not a stranger over the phone!

  • Help your loved one pay their bills. Between online billing and banking, it is easy to help your loved one pay their bills without having to sit with them to look at statements and write out checks. If you (or a trusted family member or friend) Senior care assistant reading bookcan see transactions as they happen, you have a better chance of stopping a payment to scammers.
  • Visit your loved one or make sure they socialize with others. Seniors who are alone make great targets for scammers. The more isolated they are, the more they will potentially believe a scammer’s story and go along with it. If your senior can socialize with others, the will be less isolated, more confident and less likely to believe a scammer.

There are a few sites you can visit to get more information about scams or to report a scam:

  • AARP has a scams and fraud page that provides information on the latest frauds against the older people: member.aarp.org/money/scams-fraud.
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Financial Protection for Older Americans will investigate consumer fraud complaints: consumerfinance.gov/older-americans.
  • Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force – to report a scam and a resource center for seniors and their loved ones about scams: stopfraud.gov/report.html.

Naperville Senior Center is a great place for seniors to come and definitely not get scammed! Our Members socialize with other seniors eliminating that isolated-at-home-alone feeling. Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing, computer time and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

3 Facts About Senior Citizens

By Mike Cooper

As we celebrate National Awareness Month, we realize there are many things people aren’t aware of with respect to older adults. Some facts and figures are surprising; by 2019, seniors will comprise 27% of our population.*

Here are 3 facts about senior citizens you might not know:

  • Senior isolation increases the risk of mortality.**

In adults aged 52 and older, both social isolation and loneliness are associated with a higher risk of mortality. One possible explanation: “People who live alone or lack social contacts may be at increased risk of death if acute symptoms

develop, because there is less of a support network to prompt medical attention.” Efforts to reduce isolation, including attending adult day service programs, are key to addressing the issue of mortality.

  • Seniors who are physically active are less likely to have cognitive decline.

What can you do to help? If they are able, get a senior walking – even just a little bit. Start with short distances; take the long route through the dining room from the bathroom back to the sofa. It is likely they will gain endurance over time and will walk farther without extra effort.

  • DSC_0388Seniors who have more social interactions are less likely to have cognitive decline.

What can you do to help? If you know a senior, visit with them once-in-a-while; play a game, do a puzzle, bring a meal, take a walk. Better yet, have them participate in adult day service programs where they can make new friends, share stories with peers, play games and have fun.

Our Members are welcome to be as independent as they can safely be while they are with us. In addition to socialization, we encourage exercise, games and puzzles, singing, clapping, dancing and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation for our Members.

5 Ways to Stay Healthy Mentally and Physically

5 Ways to Stay Healthy Mentally and Physically

5 Ways to Stay Healthy Mentally and Physically

By Mike Cooper

As National Senior Center Month comes to a close, we finish out our blog series with the ‘E’ in LIFE, for Energy. Think about it – Why do some older adults feel good and stay active into their senior years, but others age much more rapidly? There are a variety of factors that contribute to a senior’s well-being such as physical activity, cognitive function, and social interaction. All of these factors contribute to the energy that keeps us active and in good health.

Many studies have shown the correlation between physical activity and increased mental cognition. It is important to use the body and mind in order to keep both from weakening as we age. What you do now to strengthen your body and mind will affect how you feel as you age, so start thinking about what you can do to increase those chances.

But what about a loved one who is already in their senior years? At any age, there are activities that are healthy for the body and mind; keeping the brain active, involving social interaction and DSC_0383having fun!

Here are 5 ways to stay healthy mentally and physically:

  1. Walking: a brisk 30-minute walk strengthens your heart and burns calories. Physical activity can also help increase mental cognition.
  2. Story Telling: seniors who use their imaginations instead of trying to use their memory can improve their mood, communication and social interactions.
  3. Arts & Crafts: more seniors are discovering the rewards of finding a new hobby or rediscovering a pleasurable craft from their past.
  4. Games: whether card or board games, crossword or jigsaw puzzles, plDSC_0406aying games may help prevent dementia by exercising one’s mind.
  5. Gardening: Planting flowers and veggies in a raised flower bed is a purposeful activity. Watching the flowers grow and eating the veggies provides a sense of accomplishment.

Whether you are a boomer or a millennial, you need to regularly work on staying healthy, both mentally and physically. There are plenty of activities for all ages and levels of physical or mental capacity. You just have to start!

At Naperville Senior Center, we incorporate exercise, games and music into our daily activities with our Members. I’ve been known to pick up the trumpet for the “guess what song this is” activity! Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

5 Ways to Stay Healthy Mentally and Physically

Friends – Enhancing Your Life and Improving Your Health

Friends – Enhancing Your Life and Improving Your Health

By Mike Cooper

As we continue to ‘Celebrate LIFE’ during National Senior Center Month, our focus this week is on ‘F’ – Friends.

You know the song, ‘I get by with a little help from my friends.’ Well, you can do more than ‘get by’ when you have the social support of friends. Not only can they enhance your life, they can improve your health too!

Talk like a pirate dayFriends are there for you in the good times and bad, offering congratulations or a shoulder to cry on. Even if you are not near them in proximity, a cheery phone call (or text, e-mail, or post) can help you brush off the blues.

  • Remember that stressful day at work? A call with a friend can help boost your happiness and relieve that stress.
  • Are you unmotivated to exercise or eat healthier? It’s always easier when you have someone doing it with you!
  • Did you look in the mirror and think, ‘blah?’ Nothing is better than a friend to give you a pep talk to improve your self-confidence.

Think ‘quality’ over ‘quantity.’

Although it is nice to have a wide network of friends, it is more important to have a few close friends who will be there for you through thick and thin.

At Naperville Senior Center, we know how important it is for older adults to continue to be social (see our blog, ‘Social Seniors Have Better Quality of Life). We encourage our Members to interact with each other and develop friendships. We treat our Members with kindness, dignity and respect, and really enjoy our time with them!

Independence – Important At Any Age

Independence – Important At Any Age

Independence – Important At Any Age

By Mike Cooper

child-558798_640Do you remember when you were 6 years old and you wanted to ride your bike to school by yourself? All you could think about was having that freedom to go somewhere by yourself. When you turned 16, you just wanted the car keys so you had the freedom to pick up your friends and go to the big game without having your parents drive you.

The same is true as you get older. Independence is important at any age! Seniors want the same freedoms that they remember wanting from their youth. They want to be able to live where they want, go where they want and do those things when they want. In some cases, as with physical disabilities, forgetfulness and memory loss, that may not be possible for safety reasons.

By making 3 changes to their environment, you can help an older adult stay independent for longer and help improve their well-being.

  1. Safety Needs. Add grab bars in the bathroom, night lights in strategic places, and pick up loose throw rugs. You can help an older adult stay safe by reducing some potential trip/fall hazards.
  2. senior women at the game tableSocial Needs. Well-being is linked to social and emotional support. Your loved one may not have as many friends close to call on because of their health issues, a move or possibly death. Getting your senior loved one involved in some social activities will improve their mood and help them feel more independent. Whether they come to Naperville Senior Center, volunteer or get involved in church activities, it is important for them to be around other people. (See our blog, 5 Benefits of Being a Social Senior.)
  3. Health Needs. Listen to your loved one when they talk how they feel and be and advocate for at doctors’ appointments. It is easy to dismiss an ache or pain, but if there is a persistent problem, take note. It is better to be proactive than reactive. If an older adult physically doesn’t feel well for a long period of time, that will affect their well-being and start to create a downward spiral affect. If an older adult feels good, they will be more active and able to take care of themselves.

From an early age, we all want to be independent. That doesn’t change as we get older. We should do all we can to help seniors safely stay independent longer.
