3 Ways Adult Day Care Can Improve your Relationship with your Parent or Loved One

family-515530_640Adult day care might be just the right solution for you or someone you love.  We all want to have great relationships with our family members – parents, children, siblings. But as our parents begin to age, that may not always be as easy as we think. If our parents can no longer get around themselves – or if one of our parents passes away, leaving the other parent alone – they may start to feel isolated and depressed. There are                                           community resources and programs that can be the perfect answer for your family.

By getting your loved ones out of the house and into a community atmosphere where they can participate in social support activities, you are encouraging them to have some independence throughout the day.

Here are 3 ways adult day care can help improve your relationship with your loved one:

  1. New Topics for Conversation – when your parent or loved one has new social interactions, s/he will have new things to talk about with you. What ‘Joe’ did during crafts; what ‘Betty’ had to say about her grandchildren; and the pictures that ‘Ruth’ showed of the new great-grandchild! Instead of repeating old stories, your loved one will have new stories to tell from new interactions.
  1. dependent-441408_640Better Physical and Emotional Health – when your parent or loved one is at Naperville Senior Center, not only will s/he have the opportunity to interact with other seniors and staff, but s/he will be stimulated with both physical and mental exercises. This may help improve your loved one’s quality of life and overall satisfaction. It is much better to interact with someone who is satisfied with life versus unsatisfied, especially when they are related to you.
  1. Longer (and better quality of) Life – people who stay socially active may live longer than those who are isolated and by themselves and their quality of life is better. If your loved one is going to live longer, help them live it to the highest quality! They will thank you for it.

We worry about our parents and children when we can’t be there for them when they need our help. But you don’t have to go it alone. There are resources, like Naperville Senior Center, to help take the daytime burden off of you, give you peace of mind and help improve your relationship with your loved one.

We would like to have your loved one see our adult day care facility and have lunch with us! Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, Home Away From Home.

Fast from Doom & Gloom; Feast on Positive Attitude

Fast from Doom & Gloom; Feast on Positive Attitude

Fast from Doom & Gloom; Feast on Positive Attitude

Beginning of the Lent. The Lenten season leading up to Easter is usually about giving something up. Maybe in the past you gave up chocolate, caffeine, liquor, sweets or something else. But for many older adults considering joining an adult day service program, and others suffering from diabetes, fasting from food is unhealthy. Did you know March is also National Nutrition Month? Maybe we can give up something to promote healthy living instead of giving up something ‘just because.’

As a caregiver, you may be thinking that you already give up so much taking care of your loved one, your family, and your job. You haven’t had time for yourself in a long time.

But as a caregiver, taking care of yourself should be the first thing that you do. If you have ever been on an airplane, the flight attendants tell you, “in the event of an emergency, oxygen masks will come down. Make sure you put your mask on before you help someone else.” The same is true for your health. You cannot be at your best to help a loved one if you have not taken care of your own needs. That may include having time to get more work done at your office, get to the doctor, the spa, or even out for lunch with friends.

Caregivers: Let’s think about the Lenten ‘fasting’ in the reverse. What can you do during this season to have hope, feel refreshed and have peace of mind?

  • feast

    Feast on hanging with family

FAST on lack of time for self-care

    • FEAST on spa day
  • FAST on lousy job productivity
    • FEAST on the job promotion
  • FAST on not enough family time
    • FEAST on hanging with the family
  • FAST on feeling guilty
    • FEAST on being strong
  • FAST on fatigue
    • FEAST on increased energy
  • FAST on stress and anxiety
    • FEAST on peace of mind

When you have a positive attitude and are grateful for what you have, your outlook changes for the better. The internal conversation that you have with yourself is more powerful than you may realize. So make that conversation a positive one!

Future Members: Enroll your loved one in our program and they will also be able to “give up” many things:

  • Feast

    Feast on friendships

FAST on being lonely and loneliness

    • FEAST on friendships
  • FAST on empty house
    • FEAST on community of friends and family
  • FAST on waiting for someone to call
    • FEAST on looking forward to tomorrow
  • FAST on isolation
    • FEAST on inclusion
  • FAST on depression
    • FEAST on happiness and cheerfulness
  • FAST on nobody to speak to
    • FEAST on conversation with friends
  • FAST on boredom
    • FEAST on exciting activities

Each day we provide our Members with the physical, mental and emotional tools they need to be joyful and filled with hope. Our members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, harmonize and sometimes they close their eyes. But most important is they socialize, exercise and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.

Enroll your loved one into Naperville Senior Center, Adult Day Services.  Neither you nor your loved one needs to be from Naperville to be a member of our inclusive center. You can also schedule a tour to see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”  Call 630.857.3017 today!

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

A Look Back to Gain Perspective

In the two years since we received our permit to begin construction on the Naperville Senior Center space so much has happened! It seems like just yesterday when Pam, Emily, Zach and I spent Christmas 2014 with our hardhats on looking at the drawings and realizing this was really going to happen!

With our two year anniversary coming up on February 25th, it is a good time to reflect on everything that has happened, while looking forward to a prosperous new year!

  • Olympic-Games-senior-citizens, regain controlOur charter Member, Charlene, started with us the week after we opened and she still brightens our day and provides us with lots of laughs with every visit.
  • We have had many Members join us in the last two years. On any given day we could have 10-25 Members enjoying games, crafts, exercise, singing, dancing and a hot noontime meal. We are grateful to have each and every one of them with us!
  • In June 2016 we hosted our second annual mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society, and raised $4,590 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise, even if it is small steps, and being able to do it for an important cause was great motivation. Some of our Members’ families even joined in on the fun!
  • Our Members again planted a garden that thrived throughout the spring and summer months. We regularly served our bounty to our Members as part of a healthy, nutritious lunch. They literally were able to enjoy the fruits (and vegetables) of their labor!
  • We provided fun activities for our Members including pet therapy, dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween for a costume parade and to get treats and play games with our Members.
  • Our Members enjoyed a variety of concerts throughout the year including a bagpipe concert on Bagpiper Appreciation Day, DJ Karl Knutson singing standards, and Christmas concerts from the Young Naperville Singers and The Samuel Edgar Band.
  • We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn. If you know of a group who needs a meeting or socializing space, let them know about Naperville Senior Center!
  • We hosted our 2nd Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in October. Thank you to all the vendors and shoppers who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making some of our crafts that were sold that day.
  • Along with our friends at Aurora Business United, we hosted a Business After Hours event with the Lisle Chamber of Commerce in August. We had a fantastic turnout; thank you to everyone who came to network, socialize and check out our facility.
  • We were also able to host two St. Elizabeth Seton Choir Christmas parties. The two dozen voices singing truly sounded like a choir of angels. This past Christmas, both of our children made it home and it was one of the best days of our lives!

It’s hard to believe we were able to fit so much into the last 12 months. We know 2017 will be even more amazing for us and our Members! Our hope is that everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

If you haven’t had a chance to join us at one of these events, just contact us to schedule a quick tour or a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

3 Lessons Learned from March Madness

The NCAA Basketball Tournament, known as March Madness, is well underway with only four teams left – playing for the right to be in the championship game next week. While these four teams are some of the best college basketball teams in the country, this tournament has had its share of thrilling shots, suspense and upsets.

Here are 3 business/life lessons learned from this year’s tournament:

  • basketball-768713_640You always have a chance. That chance may be slim, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show up and do the best you can. Remember David and Goliath; the odds makers probably didn’t give David very good odds either.
  • Don’t give up. It’s not over ‘til it’s over. There were several games in this tournament that were decided at, literally, the last second. You have to be continually present, focused and committed to what you are doing. You may not always win, but no one can tell you that you didn’t give it your all.
  • If you make it interesting, people will come. Unlike professional leagues (let’s not debate whether these college players are really professionals that happen to be in college), the NCAA Tournament is ‘one and done.’ Lose and you are done; win and you move on. No best out of 3, 5 or 7 games. Anyone can have a bad game – or a really good one – which is why this tournament draws millions of fans who watch the game in person, on television, computers or phone and more who have taken the time to fill out their brackets. Whatever you are doing, personally or professionally, make it interesting. Someone will be intrigued and will want to know what it is about.

At Naperville Senior Center we are passionate about what we do to give our Members the respect and independence they deserve. We want them to enjoy their time with us through socialization, activities, games and puzzles, exercise and even breaking bread together.

  • happy memberAt NSC, everyone has a chance; a chance to enjoy fun activities, do a little exercise and socialize with up to a dozen of their peers.
  • Our Members never give up. (Okay, some of them take a nap from time to time.) They realize they have certain limitations but they now look forward to their next visit.
  • Interesting activities recently at the Center: Pinot’s Palette conducted an art workshop, all Members received an ‘Oscar’ for their special talent, Bagpiper Tracey performed a recital, and a 134 pound dog came to visit twice.

When we hear our Members say they look forward to coming each day, we know we are doing our best. Each week there is something new, different and interesting for them to do or learn; we want our Members to grow!

The Pros and Cons of Television

The Pros and Cons of Television

The Pros and Cons of Television

By Mike Cooper / Pros and Cons of TV

johnny-crawford-396028_640‘Back in the day,’ there were only 3 television networks. The shows that they broadcast all had a moral to the story and, for the most part, happy endings. You know what I’m talking about. Watch a rerun of The Rifleman, Leave it to Beaver or The Lone Ranger; the good guy won, the bad guy lost and somebody learned something along the way.

Fast-forward 50 years. With cable and satellite programming, not to mention streaming apps, YouTube and other sites with video content, there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of options available to most people airing millions of shows each month. The shows range from reality to theatrical productions, drama to comedy, risqué to cartoons. The good guy doesn’t always win and there isn’t always a moral to the story. Did the attention span of the average person drop because of all these choices or did the choices come about because our attention span dropped?

Here are a few pros and cons to all the content available today:

Pro:      Choices

If you want to watch something, chances are you’ll be able to find it somewhere. Want to catch a rerun of Seinfeld or catch up on world news? There are several stations that air them (generally not the same stations). Interested in cooking, home improvement projects or restoring an old car? You can find programming about those topics as well.

Con:    Too Many Choiceslaptop-425826_640

Is there something to be said for having too many choices? Is your world enriched because of Honey Boo Boo or Keeping Up With The Kardashians? How many shows out there try to reach the lowest common denominator? If there were fewer shows, but better content, wouldn’t that be better for society, in general?

Pro:      Brings People Together

When shows like Seinfeld or the Soprano’s ended, people were talking for days about it. Was it what they expected? Could they infer anything from the ending? Today you can watch an awards show by yourself, but still join in on the millions of posts and tweets about the fashion, hosts, winners, losers, and speeches with people across the world.

Con:    Creates Sedentary Lifestyles

When we watch television, stream shows, or watch YouTube videos, we are sitting around instead of being active. Currently more than one-third of adults are considered obese. If people spent less time watching these shows and more time walking, biking, or just being active, we could reduce that percentage and save a lot of money on medical expenses that arise from obesity.

There are a lot more pros and cons than this and people on both sides are very passionate about their views. People view programming, whether on a TV, computer, or phone, for a lot of reasons – educational, entertainment, or just ‘noise’ in the background. Whatever your reason, get the most out of it. As Americans we are lucky to have these choices available to us; some societies don’t give their citizens that choice at all.
