How to Find Adult Day Care Services

Selecting Adult Day Care Near You

senior center servicesAdult day care centers provide a safe environment and planned programs that include a variety of health, social and support services in a protective setting during daytime hours. Depending on the needs of (probably) your parent or spouse and the needs of their caregiver (probably you) there are unlimited options that need to be considered and might be overwhelming.

If you’re looking for adult day care for yourself, sorting through the options can also be a challenge.  It seems more advantageous for individuals to begin attending an adult day center while they can fully enjoy the activities and company of others. As their abilities and needs change, they are then familiar with the setting and feel comforted and cared for.

In all cases, it is important for the senior, caregiver and senior center staff to understand the reasons adult day care might be appropriate. Usually, adult day care is best for people with some temporary or permanent cognitive or physical disabilities. Sometimes senior just want some interaction with others. In fact some of our members drive themselves to and from our center.

  • is isolated and lonely or desires peer interaction;
  • cannot be safely left alone;
  • lives with someone who works and is away from the home most of the day;
  • is anxious or depressed and needs social and emotional support;
  • feels uncertain and anxious when left alone;
  • requires attention that leads to your own anxiety, frustration, compromised health and/or depression.

How to Choose Adult Day Care Services

Below are some suggestions for choosing the right adult day center for you or your loved one.

Step 1 – Determine your needs

What specific services are important to the person using the center?

  • A safe, secure environment?
  • Social activities?
  • Assistance with daily living skills – walking, eating, taking medications, bathing?
  • Therapies – physical, speech, occupational, nursing?
  • Health monitoring – blood pressure, blood sugar levels, food/liquid intake, weight?
  • Nutritious meals and/or snacks? Special diet?
  • Exercise programming?
  • Specialized care such as dementia care or TBI care?

Who we care for.

adult day care frequently asked questionsWhat do you, the caregiver need?

  • Occasional free time?
  • Coverage while working?
  • Transportation for your loved one?
  • Assistance in planning care?
  • The location of the senior center is is extremely important.

Step 2 – Make an appointment to visit the center(s)

Call Mike Cooper at Naperville Senior Center at (630) 857-3017 to schedule a visit. We always have a free trial available and we think you’ll appreciate Mike’s resourcefullness and passion for helping seniors. Ask about activities for seniors.

You might want to download and assess our Online Intake Packet. You can ask him questions about it before, during or after your visit.

Step 3 – Know what to ask during your visit

Step 4 – Check references

  • Talk to two or three people who have used the center you are considering. Ask for their opinion. That’s a good reason to visit several adult day care facilities near you – ask the member you meet for their opinion of the care they are receiving. Ask about the staff.

Step 5 – Try it out

  • Select a day center and give it a try for a few days. There are no term commitments.
  • Meet the staff, see the facilities, ask about the daily or weekly schedule, find out what’s for lunch!
  • Keep in mind that it often takes several visits for a new participant to feel comfortable in a new setting and routine. Staff may have suggestions for making the transition easier both at home and at the center. More: How to Convince a Parent to Attend Adult Day Care.

Step 6 – Take care of yourself

Just like they say on airplanes; that you should place the mask over your face before putting them on your child, it is important for you to be rested, confident and satisfied that you are doing the right thing. Relax knowing your loved one is being well cared for. Always feel free to check in with the center and ask questions. We are here to help you!

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

What does the United States and Naperville Senior Center have in Common?

United-States-FlagAndLogo-300Did you enjoy your Independence Day? Food, fun and fireworks were in store for many people this holiday weekend. At the center of it all is the American Flag – Old Glory, the Stars and Stripes.

We all learned years ago in school that the 13 stripes represent the 13 British colonies that declared independence from the Kingdom of Great Britain and became the first 13 states. The stars represent each of the states that currently belong to the United States of America.

But have you ever thought about why our flag is red, white and blue? Surprisingly, there is no reason! It turns out that our Founding Fathers didn’t put a lot of thought into the flag colors, but they did for the Great Seal of the United States, which is still used to authenticate certain documents issued by the federal government.

seal-president-of-the-united-states-1163400_640They are:

White stripes: signifies purity and innocence

Red stripes: signifies hardiness and valour

Blue band: signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice

These are great traits our Founding Fathers wanted this new country called the United States of America to portray to the rest of the world.

I can also see these traits in Naperville Senior Center:

Purity: Pam and I started this business out of love and the desire to help others, especially our aging loved ones. Our hearts were (and are) pure and passionate as we put the wheels in motion to create our dream.

United-States

Flag holder designed and painted by NSC Members

Hardiness: The last year and a half has been an amazing journey and we look forward to the future. Like with any business, there have been trials and tribulations; some months travelling one step forward and two backward. But we have worked – and continue to work – through all challenges with the determination to ensure NSC is “Home Away from Home” for our Members.

Vigilance: We never stop working to make things better for our Members; continuous improvement. New equipment, games, songs, activities, food… whatever we can find that provides stimulation, both mentally and physically. Many folks working in this senior services category who have toured our ‘Home’ have commented they have not seen any place as well thought out as NSC.

At Naperville Senior Center, our focus is always on our Members, providing them the opportunity to colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, and have fun with us and the other NSC Members throughout the day. We work hard finding new ways to engage them while listening, playing, singing, socializing, or exercising with them.

Like our Founding Fathers did centuries ago, we have put a lot of thought into the details of our new venture and we are thrilled to share it with all of you.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

Thank our Veterans on Veterans Day

lessons, Veterans DayRemembering our veterans and thanking them for their service is something we should do every day, not just on Veterans Day. But Veterans Day give us the opportunity to reach out to the veterans we know. I am reminded of the World War II stories my dad would tell me when I was younger. Dad joined the Navy at the age of 18 in November 1942, and served from July 1943 to January 1946. He was in the US Navy, stationed on the USS Philadelphia in the Atlantic. This was one of two ships that supplied firepower to cover Allied landings at Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and the south of France.

One harrowing story I remember had to do with a stormy night when he was on deck. The winds were whipping and the sea was in turmoil. Luckily my dad saw a huge wave coming over the side of the ship before it hit the deck. He had the chance to grab a cable and hang on for dear life. He was literally sideways as the wind and water tried to pull him away! But luckily for us, he hung on tight and has had another seven decades with us.

Most of us knows a veteran. It might be a family member, relative, friend or neighbor. If you know one who was involved with World War II or another foreign conflict, here are 3 things you can do to capture their stories while they are alive:

  • veteran-364380_300Listen. Some vets love to tell stories from their time in the military. Others do not. If they are willing to talk about their time in the service, listen to and document their stories. You may need to ask a few leading questions. Where did you serve? What were the conditions like? What do you remember most about your time there?
  • Jog their memory. There may be some vets who want to talk about their time in the service, but their memory isn’t what it used to be. If that happens, take out any memorabilia they may have from that time. Those items may bring back memories that they forgot. Then listen and document.
  • Create something lasting. Take these stories and create a short book of them that you can give to other family members or close friends. If you captured the stories on a cell phone or video camera, you could combine them and create a nice video compilation. Even if other relatives have heard these stories over the years, it would be nice for them to have this memento they can go back to after your loved one passes away.

Our country continues to be a free because of these veterans’ dedication to this land.

Especially on this Veterans Day, make sure you thank every veteran you come across for their service and remember those vets who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

At Naperville Senior Center, we are honored to have several veterans in our midst. We thank them all for their service! Our country is free because of the brave. We love to hear the stories they tell, whether it is Veterans Day or any day of the year!

If they are not telling stories, our Members have plenty of opportunity to socialize, colorize, harmonize, hypothesize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, exercise, have fun, and plenty of activities providing mental and physical stimulation.

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience. It’s like “Home Away From Home,” but with a nurse and therapists in your living room.

5 Tips to Help Your Senior Citizen be More ‘Social’ Savvy

5 Tips to Help Your Senior Citizen be More ‘Social’ Savvy

5 Tips to Help Your Senior Citizen be More ‘Social’ Savvy

5 Tips to Help Your Senior Citizen be More ‘Social’ Savvy – By Mike Cooper

Many of us use the internet every day for research, news and to catch up with family and friends on one of several social media platforms.  ‘Kids’ of a certain age don’t know a time when there wasn’t internet access. But there are many older adults who don’t use the internet at all, or don’t use it for social media access.

Why not? “Back in the day” they didn’t have computers, much less internet, so all this technology is something foreign to them. When they were working, senior citizens used typewriters to communicate professionally, and then, those documents were hand-delivered or put into an envelope and mailed to the recipient.

But that doesn’t mean that older adults can’t learn to use the internet to stay in touch with family and friends. This is a great way to keep those seniors “in the loop” with what is going on, even if they cannot get out.

PostOpPicIn fact, my dad, who turned 91 in March, is a Senior Citizen Facebook user since 2009! (My two kids ‘friended’ him years before they let me stock their updates.) Just a couple weeks ago dad went into the hospital to have a pacemaker put in. He took a post-surgery selfie of him and his wife, Kitty, and he posted it to Facebook. That post got over 65 likes and 45 comments congratulating him for a successful procedure! (A pre-surgery selfie he took of him and my baby sister Corti, that she posted, got over 150 likes and 56 comments!) How’s that for the power of the internet! My dad was able to see those likes and comments and he knew people were thinking about him and wishing him well. There are so many seniors who have a procedure done not knowing if anyone knows they are having it or feeling those good wishes, and that is a shame!

Even more so, it is about seeing what the kids, grandkids or even great-grandkids are doing; being able to share in their joys and successes even if they can’t be there.

Do you want your senior loved one to have the social aspect? Here are five tips to help your loved one be more social savvy:

  • Get a tablet. If they don’t already have a computer, there is no need to buy them one. A tablet provides more than enough functionality for senior citizen’s to access to social media and with a bigger screen. It may even be easier to use than a cell phone.
  • Cell service vs WIFI. If your loved one doesn’t already have Wi-Fi service, you should check the costs of adding their device (with cell service) to your plan versus getting Wifi for them. A lot of family plans allow you to add a device for very little per month. Chances are your loved one won’t use a lot of data for their little social media usage. (I’m on the AT&T family plan for four phones with unlimited texting and ample data space. The kids anti-up just $40/month instead of up to $135 for a new plan of their own.)
  • Make it simple. Set up a basic Facebook account for them and ‘friend’ a few family members, relatives and/or friends. This way, they can start seeing what other people are doing right away.
  • Make it simple, part two! Show them how to get to the right app and how to navigate through the newsfeed. Write out easy instructions so they can go back to them if they get stuck when you are not around.
  • Follow up. After a little while, see if they are still going to the app. If not, find out why not. Maybe they forgot what to do. A simple refresher could help with that. Let the grandkids encourage them to look at what they are doing. “Come on grandma, I want you to see the pictures from my dance recital.” It will make your loved one feel wanted.

Seniors should not be excluded from using social media; rather, they could benefit from being included in the activities of family and friends when they can’t be there. With a little help and guidance, you can turn your loved one into a social savvy senior!

l1 member computerIf you know of someone that cannot be left home alone safely, Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services has plenty for a senior citizen to do in a safe environment including a computer center with plenty of computing power. One member recently IM’d her niece in Indonesia.

Register today for a free 3 hour trial and see what all the excitement is about! Your loved one (and a caretaker) will receive: a free hot noon-time meal; a tour of our facility; a neck massage from one of our experienced therapists; and participation in activities like Wii Sports, Karaoke, and other games! Give a senior citizen the chance to interact with other people and gain the quality of life they may have been missing.

Top 4 Exercises for Older Adults

Top 4 Exercises for Older Adults

Top 4 Exercises for Older Adults

Exercises for older adults

At any age, exercise is important part of a healthy life. But it is even more important as adults get older. Even with all of the studies showing that consistent physical activity can help enhance longevity and quality of life, over 85% of adults are either not regularly active or not active at all!

Exercises for older adults can help prevent heart disease and osteoporosis, among other diseases. According to research from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, physical activity, including exercise, can slow the changes in the brain associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Adults who exercised 5 times a week did better on cognitive tests and had less age-related changes to the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s!

Naperville Senior Center

Below are 4 types of exercise for older adults that can help prevent a variety of age-related health issues.*

  1. Cardio – this includes activities like walking, swimming, biking, or just doing housework. Any activity that increases your heart rate for an extended period of time can improve your heart health and help you lose weight by increasing your metabolism.
  2. Strength – build muscle and increase your metabolism by lifting light weights.
  3. Balance – can help prevent falls and other accidents by building leg muscles and making older adults more stable on their feet.

    Walking the track

  4. Stretching –stretching allows you to increase your flexibility and improve your freedom of movement. This will help you stay more independent in your senior years.

(*Remember, you should always talk with your physician before starting any exercise regimen.)

You can’t control your age, but you can control how well you age. Start exercising now so you can age gracefully! Naperville Senior Center offers a variety of exercises for older adults.
