2015 – Our Best Year Yet!

Onsite with FamIt’s hard to believe that it was just a year ago when we received our permit to begin construction on the Naperville Senior Center space. I remember being there on Christmas 2014 with Pam, Emily and Zach with our hardhats on looking at the drawings and realizing this was really going to happen!

NSC 031715aOur best year yet has been jam packed since opening our doors on February 25, 2015!

  • Our charter Member, Charlene, started with us the next week. She continues to brighten our days with every visit!
  • NSC 031715We hosted our first of two ribbon cuttings on St. Patrick’s Day with the Naperville Area Chamber of Commerce.
  • Several Members have joined us throughout the year. We are grateful to have each and every one of them with us!
  • NSC 062315We hosted a mini Walk for Life to benefit the American Cancer Society in June, and raised over $2,400 to fight cancer. We want to be sure our Members continue to exercise – and being able to do it for an important cause was a great motivator!
  • NSC 091515NSC 103015We provided fun activities for our Members including planting a garden (and then enjoying the fruits and vegetables of their labor), dressing up on Talk Like a Pirate Day, and having children come by before Halloween to get treats and play games with our Members.
  • NSC 120915We have hosted several Continuing Education (CEU) Workshops after hours for nurses, therapists and social workers. We are happy to provide this amazing venue for the community when they need to come together to gather and learn.
  • NSC 110715We hosted our 1st Annual Fall Craft and Vendor Fair in November. Thank you to all 23 vendors who joined us for a wonderful event. Our Members were even involved in making most of our crafts that were sold that day.
  • NSC 120815We hosted a Business After Hours event with co-sponsor Oasis Senior Advisors, for the Naperville Chamber of Commerce in December. We had a fantastic turnout; thank you to all the Chamber and community members who joined us to celebrate the holidays and check our facility.

With all this happening in the last 12 months, we can’t wait to see what 2016 brings! Our hope is that everyone has a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! We want to thank everyone for making 2015 our best year yet.

If you haven’t had a chance to join us at one of these events, just contact us to schedule a quick tour or a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Are You Ready For Winter?

Are You Ready For Winter?

Are You Ready For Winter?

Ready for Winter – By Mike Cooper

Here we are – the middle of December. We have already had a ‘shoveling event’ including very wet and heavy snow.  If you see an elder neighbor shoveling snow, especially heavy, slushy snow, please help them.

The temperature has held pretty steady, but you know it will get colder as we get further into winter. As the seasons transition from fall to winter, make sure the older adult in your life is ready as well.  There are a few things you can do to make sure they are comfortable and healthy throughout the next few months.

 A few of obvious, but  key points to get ready for winter;

  • Dress them for the season – make sure the older adult in your life has the right clothes for the season. In Northeast Illinois, that means heavy sweaters, turtlenecks, and warm socks. See if they need extra blankets as well.
  • Check their thermostat – older adults tend to get colder faster than younger adults. Even when they are dressed for the season, they may need to have the thermostat set to a higher temperature. What might seem like an appropriate temperature for you may be too cold for them. Another important tip to be ready for winter is to remember to change the furnace filter at a minimum of every time we change the clocks; once every three months is better.
  • food-993502_640Warm foods – who doesn’t like to have something warm on a cold winter’s day? If your loved one is able to heat up food (whether in the microwave or stove top/oven), prepare food for them that will be warm, hearty and satisfying, like chicken noodle soup, chili, spaghetti and meatballs, or even pot roast. Save the cold sandwiches for another season.

When you cook for your family, make extra food and package it in separate containers that can go directly from the refrigerator into the microwave or oven. Leave instructions on the package so your loved one knows what it is and how to heat it up. Even if you can’t have meals with them, at least you will know that they are eating a warm, home cooked meal. Remember – do not wrap anything in tin-foil as this is microwave disaster.

If your loved one doesn’t live in the same area as you, see if there is a service available that might deliver food to seniors, or companies such as Meals on Wheels or Seattle Sutton.

  • Medicinal necessities – tissues, cough drops, moisturizer and even humidifiers are important to have around during the dry, winter months to make your loved one comfortable and ready for winter when they are inside more than outside.
  • Snow shoveling service – If you can, hire a local kid, neighbor, or handyman to assure that your elderly parent won’t be shoveling snow on those days when things get icy, and be sure to have some salt handy too to keep to keep ice-free walkways in front of the house.

shuffleboardWhen you help your loved one prepare for the winter months with what they wear and eat and how they live day-to-day, you know they will be comfortable and you will enjoy a little peace of mind.

Naperville Senior Center provides a warm, safe environment for your loved one. Our Members have hot, noontime meals and participate in a variety of activities such as exercises, wii bowling, puzzles, singing and clapping, dancing, and the brand new shuffleboard, all providing mental and physical stimulation. We are ready for winter!

Thanks to our Veterans

Thanks to our Veterans

Thanks to our Veterans

Top Right – Honor Flight; Top Left – Current

As we celebrate Veterans Day, I am reminded of the stories my dad would tell about his time in the US Navy in the Atlantic during World War II. He joined the Navy at the age of 18 in November 1942, and served from July 1943 to January 1946 on the USS Philadelphia, one of two ships that supplied firepower to cover Allied landings at Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, and the south of France.

One harrowing story had to do with a stormy night when he was on deck. The winds were whipping and the sea was in turmoil. Luckily my dad saw a huge wave coming over the side of the ship and he grabbed a cable and hung on for dear life. He was literally sideways as the wind and water tried to pull him away! But luckily for us, he hung on tight and has had another seven decades with us.

If you know a veteran, especially those from WWII or another foreign conflict, here are a few things you can do to capture their stories while they are alive:

  • If they are willing to talk about their time in the service, listen to and document their stories. You may need to ask a few leading questions.
  • If they don’t quite remember, take out any memorabilia from their time in the service. Those items may bring back memories that they forgot.
  • Take these stories and create a short book with them that you can give to other family members or close friends. Even if they heard these stories over the years, it might be nice for them to have something they can go back to after your loved one passes away.

We shouldn’t wait for Veterans Day to thank a vet for his or her service to this country. We continue to be a free country because of their dedication to this land. But especially on this day, make sure you thank every veteran you come across for their service and remember those vets who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

All of these veterans deserve our respect and gratitude. At Naperville Senior Center, all of our Members are treated with dignity and respect.

Take Time for You

Take Time for You

Take Time for You

By Mike Cooper

As we approach Thanksgiving, signs of the season are all around us. Pumpkins smashed in the roads, groceries overflowing with turkeys and cranberries, kids riding their bikes through the leaves piled up on the street, and e-newsletters gushing with gratitude. Frankly, we should be grateful for things all year long, not just in November.

We have said it before, but we’ll say it again – as Naperville Senior Center Adult Day Services continues to grow, we are grateful for the support of our family, friends and colleagues. We are most grateful for our dozens of Members and their families, who committed to improving their quality of life.
The next 8 weeks will be jammed with activities as we enter the holiday season. This is the ‘short list’ of events to keep in mind:

  • maple-leaves-62799_640Enjoy the fall foliage
  • Take down Halloween decorations
  • Veterans Day – thank a vet for their service
  • Turkey Trot 5k
  • Thanksgiving – give thanks
  • Black Friday – start (or continue) Christmas shopping
  • Cyber Monday – more Christmas shopping
  • Giving Tuesday – give to others who need it more
  • Put up Christmas (or Hanukkah/Kwanzaa) decorations
  • Hanukkah
  • Shovel the driveway (hopefully not!)
  • Start of winterchristmas-bauble-15738_640
  • Shovel the driveway, again (hopefully not!)
  • Christmas
  • Kwanzaa
  • New Year’s Eve – resolutions!

It is easy to get caught up in all of the hustle and bustle, and suddenly find yourself stressed out because there is so much to do. But remember to take time for yourself. Relax. Take a breath. Go for a massage; do some yoga. Get a mani/pedi, or just meditate for a little while. If the garland isn’t perfect, that’s okay.

Talk like a pirate dayWhile you are busy getting ready for these events – and taking time for yourself, your loved one could be safely with us celebrating as well! Let us take that one stressor away from you. We enjoy a variety of activities every day providing mental and physical stimulation for our Members. If there’s a holiday around the corner, we celebrate! (Did you see our ‘Talk Like a Pirate Day’ photo?)

Call to action: contact us to schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.
