Mike and Pam Cooper

We are thrilled to have been featured in the Internet Magazine, VoyageChicago, which highlights the best of Chicago. The article shares who we are, why we started Naperville Senior Center, Adult Day Service, what sets us apart, and why someone should bring their senior loved one to NSC. Come Visit, and see for yourself!

VoyageChicago, November 7, 2017: “Meet Mike Cooper of Naperville Senior Center, Adult Day Services in Naperville”

Why did you decide to open an Adult Day Care Center?

To me and Pam, Naperville Senior Center is a dream come true. We dreamed of starting this business since we met in college, where Pam was a physical therapy major and I was a marketing major. We designed NSC for those seniors who have been discharged from hospitals or nursing homes, but aren’t safe living alone, or those seniors who want the socialization with others. With an aging population, the need for more senior services, including adult day care centers, will continue to grow.

Who works with you at Naperville Senior Center?

My wife, Pam, is a physical therapist and guides the expert elder care practitioners. Theresa Capone, Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, is the center’s Director of Fun. The skilled staff also includes part-time registered nurses and certified nursing assistants.

What makes Naperville Senior Center different from other senior care options?

Fun Activities: Seniors don’t have to stay home alone with a home health aide watching TV all day. At NSC, we assist with walking, balance, endurance and social interaction using purposeful activities such as making crafts, playing dice games or musical instruments and singing. Just a few of the fun activities include the bean bag toss, bingo, bunco, coloring, bat the balloon, dominoes, cardio parachute, mini putt-putt golf, shuffleboard, Nerf pistol target practice and Wii bowling.

Exercise: In addition to those activities, we also have a one-of-a-kind walking track, NuStep recumbent bicycle and hi-lo mat. We encourage our Members to get some type

of physical activity, whatever fits with their physical ability. We chart Members’ laps around the track as well as time and distance on the NuStep and have observed improvements in many Members’ strength and endurance.

Music: Our ‘Performing Arts Center’ is equipped with bells, dozens of percussion instruments, a drum set, piano, trumpet and a karaoke machine. Our Members enjoy playing these instruments, listening to them or singing along. It lifts our spirits and puts a smile on everyone’s face!

Hot, Nutritious, Noon-time Meal

Nutritious and Delicious Food: We provide a hot, nutritious, noon-time meal to all of our Members, where they can eat as much or as little as they want. We have favorites such as pot roast, baked cod, chicken Kiev, and tilapia, served with vegetables, potatoes, rolls and a beverage. And of course, don’t forget about dessert!

Why should someone consider Naperville Senior Center for their senior loved one?

Naperville Senior Center is dedicated to providing quality care and day service to seniors, including those with cognitive or physical challenges. We aspire to improve the functional skills of every Member, and to promote personal independence and overall well-being.

NSC specializes in providing daytime care from experienced therapists in a safe environment.

By bringing your senior loved one to NSC, caregivers can have time to take care of themselves, to do things they enjoy and to keep themselves refreshed so they can better care for their loved ones.

We are passionate about this program and our Members; they are like family to us. This facility is indeed “Home Away From Home” for us and our Members.

Come Visit: to learn more about how NSC can provide a respite for caregivers and a great social environment for your loved one, contact us at 630.857.3017. We invite you to Come Visit and see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home.”

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Learning: The Brain’s Version of Jumping Jacks

Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, which a general term for memory loss and the loss of other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Mental decline is mostly due to altered connections in brain cells; keeping the brain active may help to generate new brain cells and increase the brain’s vitality. It’s the brain’s version of jumping jacks!

It’s never too late to learn something new

The old saying – It’s never too late to learn something new – is true! But it is more than that; it is about continually learning throughout your life. Studies have shown that a lower level of education may be related to a higher risk of Alzheimer’s later in life, due to less mental stimulation throughout a lifetime. Those people who have a higher level of education may be somewhat more protected from Alzheimer’s, possibly because the brain cells and their connections are stronger. More educated people can, and do, still get Alzheimer’s, but the symptoms may appear later.

Try to learn something new every day

Regardless of how old you are, you should continue to learn and stimulate your mind. That doesn’t mean having to get a PhD! Here are 5 simple things you can do to keep your brain active and healthy:

  1. man-863744_1280Put down the remote and read a book. Whether you like romance novels, history or fiction, reading is a great way to stimulate your mind. If you don’t want to spend the money to buy a book (or e-book), get a book from your local library.
  2. Take a class. Do you want to learn how to paint, speak a foreign language, or play bridge? There are many adult education classes available at your local park district, community college or adult education center. Find something that you want to learn how to do and do it!
  3. Old hands solving jigsaw puzzlePlay games. Do you like to play Scrabble, Monopoly, Bunco or Battleship? Keep playing! Learning can be disguised as fun! Remember, every Wednesday at 5pm, we play BINGO at our facility.
  4. Do crossword, Sudoku or regular puzzles. Whether you are a master at the New York Times crossword puzzle or just like the scenic puzzle that you found at a garage sale, they challenge you to think and keep your mind active.
  5. DSC_0406Garden. Yes, even when you are gardening you are learning something, which stimulates your brain. So throw on those gloves and plant some veggies and flowers!

At Naperville Senior Center, we incorporate games, puzzles, education, gardening and a host of other activities into our daily routine with our Members. We strive to provide them with mental stimulus to keep them active, engaged and included.

Contact us to get schedule a FREE 3-hour trial at our facility so you can see what we have to offer and understand the Naperville Senior Center experience, “Home Away From Home”.

Top 3 Life Lessons I Learned from my Dad

Top 3 Life Lessons I Learned from my Dad

Top 3 Life Lessons I Learned from my Dad

By Mike Cooper

BillCooper-300As I relaxed on Father’s Day, I started thinking about all the things my dad taught me over the years. There were many lessons; some may have gone on deaf ears at the time. But as I got older and had children of my own, I saw the wisdom in all of those lessons.

Here are the top 3 lessons I learned from my dad:
  1. You Can Do It Yourself. He showed me, by example, that you CAN fix many things on your own. I learned how to diagnose a problem, understand what was involved to fix it, how to fix it, and, most importantly, when it was necessary to ask for assistance. It helped me to think through problems logically and strategically, not only with home improvement projects, but in business too.
  2. Honesty. When my dad taught me how to golf, he made it clear that it was a gentleman’s game. Cheating was not allowed. You can learn a lot about people by playing a round of golf with them. No matter how bad of a round you are having, you should not take it out on someone else, and there is nothing to be gained from beating yourself up over it. Understand what you did wrong and learn from it so you will be better the next time.
  3. Perseverance. My dad told me to keep going after my dreams. At times those dreams were put off because of other priorities, but they were not forgotten. Pam and I didn’t give up; we kept working to reach our goal. After 26 years, we fulfilled our longstanding dream by opening Naperville Senior Center last year and we love every minute of it! That, in part, is what dad instilled in me all those years ago.

Mike and dad-300I have my dad to thank for teaching me the lessons that have molded me into the man I am today. I hope my children learn half as much from me as I have from my dad.

At NSC, we have several dads, grandpas and great-grandpas as Members. We know they worked hard to instill good life lessons into their children and we wish them a Happy Father’s Day.

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

3 Powerful Benefits of Mailing Letters to Seniors Right Now

When was the last time you mailed a letter or a card to someone? We are not talking about sending text messages or an e-mail, but an actual card in the mail?  It may have been a while, which is a shame.  I remember looking forward to getting cards in the mail for holidays or special occasions.  Now it’s a Facebook post or a text.  Don’t get me wrong, those are great!  But many seniors are not online or if they are, they would still appreciate an old-fashioned snail-mail once-in-a-while.

senior activities, letters

Send a letter to a senior today! Even if it is just to say ‘hello, I’m thinking of you!’

I know that actual greeting cards can be expensive; prices seem to keep going up with everything these days. But why not get a package of stationary to send a note just to say you care or pick up a box of blank cards where you can put in the sentiment?  If you have kids, take out the construction paper and crayons or markers and let them make a homemade card.

Here are 3 powerful benefits of mailing letters to seniors:

  • Improves Mood. Who isn’t happy knowing that someone is thinking about them? Your loved one goes to the mailbox and sees something in there other than bills or catalogs. Already that improves their mood! Then they read your note and they are in an even better mood!
  • Increases Sensory Stimulation. Not only can a loved one read your handwriting in a letter, they can feel it. It is not just type-written text on a screen. There are more senses in use when a letter or card is mailed versus an online greeting. Increased sensory stimulation is used as a therapy to help older adults with dementia; why not let your loved one have the added benefit with the experience.
  • It’s a Win-Win. Your loved one will be happy to get something from you, but you will feel good you sent it. An online greeting still conveys a sentiment, but why not go the extra step once-in-a-while. It only takes a couple minutes to put something in the mail. The better you feel about the experience, the more you are going to want to do it, and the positive cycle continues!

At Naperville Senior Center we provide sensory stimulation to our Members every day. Some of our Members have communicated with their grandchildren across the world from our computer station, and we recently swapped notes with the children over at Bright Horizons on ‘letter day.’ Very rewarding watching our Members smile as the read the notes.

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

4 Activities to Celebrate Earth Day with your Senior Loved One

This year, Earth Day is Saturday, April 22. Since 1970 it is a day on which many people around the world will show support for environmental protection. There are events in many communities on that day and throughout the week. Unfortunately, many seniors are unable to get to these events; they may not have transportation or physically cannot participate. But that that does not mean they can’t be involved in their own way!

Here are 4 activities you can do with your senior loved one this week to help them celebrate Earth Day:

  1. Celebrate Earth Day

Our Members help plant our garden in the spring and enjoy the fruits of their labor throughout the summer!

Plant a garden. Who doesn’t love fresh-picked produce?! Think herb garden, or maybe a couple tomato plants. An herb garden would be perfect for indoors and could easily be transplanted outside next month. If you are handy, you could build a small, raised planter box where your loved one could comfortably sit or stand to help plant the garden. Not only are the herbs and vegetables good for them, they will appreciate being involved. Farm to table would be about 10 feet. It doesn’t get any more ‘local’ than that!

  2. Recycle. Think about all the items in your own home that you haven’t used in years. Now think about all the things in your parents’ home that they haven’t used for decades! Why wait for something to happen to them before you go through some of these items with them? At that point, the process will be a lot more stressful because you will have suffered a loss and some things might wind up in the garbage instead of being donated or sold.

Don’t try to tackle the whole house at once; it can be too overwhelming. Pick a closet, drawer or corner of a basement and go through these things with them a little at a time. Give them the chance to tell a story about the item, if there is one. Then determine if the item should be given to someone in the family, donated or sold. If there are old family photos, see if your loved one remembers who is in the picture, when it was taken or the reason for it. Save that information somewhere and scan the picture(s) so they are safe digitally.

  1. Plant a tree. This might not be something your senior loved ones can do themselves, but they can still be involved. Find out what their favorite tree is (hopefully something that grows well in your zone). If they still live in their own home, find a spot to plant a tree, even a little one, where they can see it. Maybe they could help water it from time to time. They can take pride in seeing something grow and live on for a long time, knowing that they were involved with its growth. If they live in a community where you cannot do this, maybe you can plant their tree by your house. When they come over to see you, point out the tree they that picked out – their ‘favorite’ tree.
  2. Celebrate earth day

    Spring flowers are in bloom!

Take a walk. Especially this spring, the trees and flowers are in full bloom and the weather has been warm. Get your loved one outdoors to enjoy the beautiful scenery. If they can only go a short distance, walk down their street to see the tulips and daffodils that are in front of their neighbors’ houses. If they can go walk farther, check out the beautiful scenery in your town or neighboring towns.

In the Naperville area, the flowers and trees along the Riverwalk and in the Morton Arboretum are in full bloom. There are plenty of trails, parks and preserves in the area to walk and enjoy the sights.

The last 2 years we have had our own raised garden where our Members help to plant, water, pick and eat the wonderful vegetables we grow. We are looking forward to having that garden again! Our farm to table distance is only about 20 feet!

When they are not gardening, our Members socialize, verbalize, improvise, evangelize, visualize, exercise, have fun, and a host of other activities to provide mental and physical stimulation.
